Gay medal of Honor recipients?

Post by Alex Moon »

I've been looking around online, but have seen nothing about this. Does anyone know if there have been any MoH recipients who were later found to be gay?

Secondly, what would the reaction be in this day in age if a soldier who was awarded the honor was found to be gay?

First off, I don't think so, but that is something to look into. As per the second question, usually, for some reason, they are given a dishonorable discharge from their service, and not allowed to have any recompense for it. At least, this is what I've read in Time and Reader's Digest. So far, I think that although there have been suits filed, none of them have actually been successful.

Actually, I think gays are given an other than honorable discharge. It's kind of like the difference between lay offs and getting fired but it does make a difference.

Ah, ok. I might have read that wrong. But it's also been a while since I read anything about it.

I'd wager you got it right and they just didn't understand the difference. It's a fine distiction.

Ok, then. But IIRC, and I doubt I do, I THINK that the persons that were discharged stated that they had been given dishonorable discharges, even one woman who was highly decorated in (I think) the Nat'l Guard.

It might be related to the conduct while in uniform. If they were involved in improper fraternization then that might well change what happens. It's not a blanket rule.
