He was born in Providence? That seems so anti-climatic.

i can think of a lot of places around here that could have damaged his childhood psyche. gothic shit and gargoyles everywhere. you know as a kid he spent a lot of time at Butler mental hospital while his (mother?) went nutszo. that old cavern makes Bellevue look like the Ritz-Carlton

Emphasis mine.
Strangely enough, the faceless gargoyle-like creatures known as "Night-Gaunts" featured in
The Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath first appeared in a nightmare Lovecraft had as a child.

everyone is a product of their environment. if Lovecraft hadn't grown up in a gothic urban industrial setting with frequent trips to visit his mother in the mental ward maybe he'd have written love stories.

Actually, I think HPL's interest in horror stories was triggered by his grandfather's Edgar Allan Poe collection.

Whoa, you mean to say someone actually got some in Rhode Island? Mr. & Mrs. Lovecraft got laid?!
Well, that in and of itself is noteworthy.

Alred Hitchcock had his birthday just a short while ago. Masters of horror they are. On the plus side, we have more excellent reading/viewing material; on the negative, there are now killer birds encircling the building as well as an ancient submerged alien about to drive us all mad. I suppose you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Not to be a nitpick, but Cthugha (that giant fireball-monster that dwells near Fomalhaut) is a creation of August Derleth, not Lovecraft.

That's probably how they earned that surname.
(come on, you saw that coming!)
