This is pretty cool:

NOAA POSTS IMAGES ONLINE OF NORTHEAST BLACKOUT

Aug. 15, 2003 — NOAA today posted online satellite images taken before and after of the historic blackout of the Northeastern United States, which plunged millions of people into darkness. NOAA processed the night lights data taken by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). NOAA archives the data from the satellite.

[...]

Night Lights satellite image about 20 hours before the blackout taken Aug. 13, 2003*. (With annotations)

Night Lights satellite image about seven hours after the blackout. (With annotations)

* NOAA operates on GMT (or Zulu time, as they call it.) That's why the before picture has a timestamp of 14 Aug 2003 0129Z but is noted as being taken on the 13th.

Edit: really? I just looked around and didn't see any satellite photo threads...

Maybe you're thinking of a private forum? Maybe the link is buried in another thread? Maybe...

*wanders off, mumbling to self*

It's a good thing I don't wear glasses, because I'm the type of person that would have them propped up on top of my head, running around saying, "Where the hell are my glasses? I can't find 'em anywhere!"

Anyhow, thanks ver :)
