So, I go for a hike today and in almost the same exact spot where I stepped on mouse last week, this guy's car jumps the curb. Im looking down pushing the stroller when I hear bang! And there is a Honda taking out all the sapplings along the road side and he is up on the sidewalk.
If we had started our hike 60 seconds sooner, we probably we have been hit by the guy. But thats not the bad part. He straightens his wheels and starts driving DOWN THE SIDEWALK straight at us!
Needless to say we got out of the way and called 911. He drove down the sidewalk for quite a ways and came to a stop at the intersection. As he drove by I crossed the street to get his licence plate. He was very confused and dazed. I didnt get to find out if he was drunk, sick, or what.

That kind of stuff is messed up. One time in high school, I was walking to a friend's house after school, and a car was hit by another car and went up onto the sidewalk rather violently, only about ten to fifteen feet in front of me. I had just finished tying my shoes, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd have been hit if I hadn't tied my shoes. Must be lucky.

Yeah, thats pretty lucky. I took a look at the accident site today. The guy never even used his brakes. He simply went up the sidewalk and did a slalom through several sets of trees. Makes ya think.

San Ramon, eh? I was born there, lived there about two and a half years before moving down here. Went back to visit a few years back, lovely area.

The California Highway Patrol called me today to take a brief statement. Turns out the guy in the car was a diabetic and went into some sort of insulin shock. Evidently he had not been taking care of himself. He has no memory of the accident. All he remembers is leaving work and then being on the sidewalk stopped in front of an intersection with a fire truck next to him.
Scary, he never saw us, or realized he could have run over a 1 year old baby.

I hope he does a better job of it, in jail

I went back to visit Russia last winter. They were preparing for the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, so they were repairing the horrible roads (they look like they haven't recieved any maintenance since Brezhnev's time (or at least since the collapse of the Soviet Union). This meant that most of the streets in center were closed dowm. Which meant that there were HUGE traffic jams (people just left their cars and took the subway home).
So, people who didn't want to wait drived on the sidewalk. Imagine an endless stream of cars going down the sidewalks at 30 kph, while telling pedestrians (who were walking in a single file, with their back against the wall of the building) to get the fuck out of the way.
Gotta love Russia.
Have a very nice day.
