That's fucked up. But many children are killed because of negligence on the part of parents. This isn't much of a strike against Everquest, as much as a I hate it.

True. I'm not knocking against the gaming industry. Just that the woman didn't have the common sense to take her kid with her. I'm a hard core gamer but I'd never forget my own kid, if I had one.Sea Skimmer wrote:That's fucked up. But many children are killed because of negligence on the part of parents. The article does not shriek about banning Everquest, so let's not jump on that bandwagon quite yet. If the woman was addicted to alcohol instead of Everquest, they would state that in the same manner.

Well, personally, I've seen this happen before, like the famous case where the mom blamed EQ for killing her son instead of the fact that he was always a recluse, always depressed, and just a bad social case waiting to crack.Darth Wong wrote:The article does not shriek about banning Everquest, so let's not jump on that bandwagon quite yet. What a sick fucking Bitch. Unfortunately she won't get the chair, and will get out of prison one day and probably procreate again. If only there were a way for us to somehow extract the last few minutes of memory from a deceased individual and imprint that very image on the mind of the offender, forcing them to relive their victim's death constantly; in their dreams, awake, anytime. No peace. none at all. They would feel all the fear of that child, the confusion, the physical pain, the agony of the last breath when that poor child through no fault of her own slipped into oblivion. Bitch.

People blame alcohol in the same way. It's always easier to blame the substance than the addict. Personally, I would throw junkies in prison rather than retaining the current system where it's legal to use drugs but not sell them.Vorlon1701 wrote:Well, personally, I've seen this happen before, like the famous case where the mom blamed EQ for killing her son instead of the fact that he was always a recluse, always depressed, and just a bad social case waiting to crack.Darth Wong wrote:The article does not shriek about banning Everquest, so let's not jump on that bandwagon quite yet. Two whole fucking hours. That sure is an aditiction.
I guess watching football for three hours doesn't compare.

Well, there are people who play for 48 hour sessions, and those I call addicted, but you're right, 2 hours is a fucking small amount of time to play an online game. Then again, when your kid's in the car, it's a fucking huge amount. For that situation, the nominal amount is 0 time AT ALL.Alyeska wrote:Two whole fucking hours. It's just that the media are quick to blame video games, simply because it's the easiest thing to do. And it gets headlines.

They call it an addiction because of the way peoples' obsession with it causes them to forget other things in their lives. The timeframe is irrelevant. It takes only a few seconds for a heroine junkie to mainline the stuff; does this mean it's not an addiction?

Well, EQ's not a normal addiction. First of all, it's all mental. Second of all, the game itself is designed in a way that makes it worse. For example, to safely exit the game, one must find a safe point, sit down (which is extremely dangerous in anyplace else but a city or extremely safe point in the game), and type in the /camp command. After this, it takes 30 seconds until the character logs out. Now, if you manage to pull this off in a dangerous spot, there's always the risk of coming back and being assraped by some wandering NPC that REALLY doesn't like you, at which point you could spend hours getting all of your equipment back (It takes months to acquire good equipment.) Thus, logging on requires a large amount of free time, and getting off is hell because it requires preparation and, again, time.Darth Wong wrote:They call it an addiction because of the way peoples' obsession with it causes them to forget other things in their lives. And 2 hours is a pretty small amount of time to play, not much can be done in less than an hour's span online.

Disgusting...
Obviously she developed an addiction of her own, since she seemed to be so concerned about playing that she didn't even take her daughter out of the GOD DAMN CAR IN THE FUCKING APARTMENT PARKING LOT!!
Fuck, shit like this really pisses me off.

Please don't make ecuses. Everquest is not "Designed" to make it more addictive. that is a load of horseshit created by the media so they can cash in on a story. You can log out in three seconds. /quit works as well as /camp, only you are vulnerable for something like 1 minute. Big fucking deal. IT is still a game, and those who are "Addicted" Aren't as such. They obviously have an underlying problem for which everquest is an outlet. If it wasn't everquest, it would be something else. that still doesn't mean its an excuse to forget your responsibilities. My former marriage was obliteratedbecause of this so called "Addiction" (I don't play EQ anymore, not because it "Cost me my marriage" but because it's ram-me-in-the-ass-with-a-pitchfork boring now, but I was miserable in my marriage anyway, I was looking for a way out and too chicken shit to stand up and say, "I want a Divorce" addiction indeed.....Vorlon1701 wrote:Well, EQ's not a normal addiction. Please, tell me how far you went in this game, because only an idiot would use /quit in the middle of a raid event, or deep in a place like Sebilis or Howling Stones, or even Chardok. Plus, you've played, look at med times and regen times. It takes 6 minutes at the least to regain enough power to fight again, and that's fighting in a group!Chardok wrote: Please don't make ecuses. Plus, I'm not saying that it isn't the addict's fault. If you'd read my earlier post, you'd see that I'm not "excusing" them, I'm just saying that the media's blowing all of this out of proportion. Please, read my former posts before judging me.
