Not exactly the same topic, but dont forget the numerous WWII movies of the 60's and 70's where German Panzers where M-48 or M-60 tanks with Iron Crosses painted on the side.

Iron Eagle 2 tried passing off F4s as Migs. Iron Eagle 3 (or was it 4?) tried passing off F5s on the ground as F16s on the ground.

I think all of the planes for that Iron Eagle movie were provided by the Israeli airforce which is why there were only F-16s and F-4s.

In The Hunt for Red October the flight deck camera video of the F-14 crashing into the flight deck was not of an F-14.

That kind of annoyed me because there had to have been footage of an F-14 crashing that they could have used or at least faked better than that.

Iron Eagle 3 they try to make us believe that an unknown type of airplane was a Me 262.

Anyone with a knowledge of aircraft can tell those aircraft apart - they bear none or little resemblance to each other. (not to mention the difference in size)

One of the reasons I can't watch J.A.G. is because of some of the liberties they take. IRC one where this super advanced computer controlled destroyer looked like something from our mothball fleet. Way too many visible guns for one thing.


The F-14 flying lawyer also bugs me. Not so much that he maintains his quals since lots of officers do stuff like that so they can keep getting flight pay etc... but that Harm seems to go on missions. Not necessarilly flying missions but he's a lawyer and he's going on covert missions.

Well, you have to remember at the time they filmed the show using "real" aggressor aircraft. At least they could have said the F-5 was a Mig-21. That would be more reasonable.

Actually I believe they called them Mig-28s a totally fictitional plane that was supposed to be the latest and greatest according to the film.

Once again they had to make do with what was available from the agressor squadrons. I understand that later the Top Gun school got some F-16s for the aggressor squadrons but they took such a beating from all of the dog fighting that they we grounded quite a lot because of microfractures.

I watched about half of Patton on cable yesterday. They did a good job of making planes that resembled Ju-88's. I suppose they could have been real, this was filmed back when Warbirds were more common. Anyone know?

I was just going to mention Patton. I believe that the tanks they use for the American side are called "Patton I's" but I'm not certain. Check imdb.

I don't think so. There aren't a lot of German warbirds. More likely they're another aircraft mocked up to look like ju-88s.

Irion Eagle III had P-38's and Zero's dogfighting F-4's and F-5's. I mean come on!

Your probably right, out side of a few in a museum Ive never seen a German Warbird in flying condition.

Pearl Harbor: Trying to pass of Spruance-class destroyers as WW 2-era ships indicates a low respect for the audience's historical knowledge. That really annoyed me.

A Bridge to Far used a modified Leopold 1 as their WW2 German tank, and a couple M109A2's shown briefly with nothing but a paint job as German WW2 SPG's. T-34's have been passed off as WW2 German tanks as well, though that's slightly acceptable since the Germans did use captured models, but only on the Eastern front.

Rambo III also had a French Gazelle passed of as a Soviet helicopter without modifications.

AT-6's where modified to look like several different Japanese aircraft for Tora Tora Tora

Well when they filmed The Battle of Britain the Spanish didn't exactly have a shortage of them, 47 being used for the inspections scenes and for a few shots of large German formations. Though they only flew two to England for the air combat which I think was really very limiting to some shots. Especially since German bombers flew in trios.

Does anyone foresee a time in the future when some WWII militray equipment might be CGI'd for real accuracy (particualrly planes I assume) As the technology improves we might see CGI hordes of T-34's charging through a snowy tundra at emplaced German positions. Or am I just dreaming? I can see some studio exec going "A tank's a tank, who's going to know the difference?"
