Oooo-err
Sorry, if you earn less than $90 a year we are unable to calculate your position on the richlist.

If this is the case you would be one of the billions of people who earn less than $2 a day. Typically you would also not have access to a computer or an Internet connection.

If you are earning less than $90 a year it¹d be unfair to ask you to donate money to Care International if however, you actually earn more than this it may be worth re-calculating your position
Obviously doesn't cope with those of us who are submitting a loss-making tax return. Needs some additional questions about assets and liabilities I think.

I agree with Durrran Korr income does not equal wealth alone. You need to factor in local cost of living too. Try telling someone making 50K / year living in Boston or the San Francisco Bay Area they are rich or wealthy. I bet they laugh in your face.

Just take the average of your past few years, or pick the last tax return that you made money on.

Assuming, of course, you've made money, because if your household is continuously spending more money than it takes in, your savings/assets will eventually run dry...

True to an extent. Given equal incomes, the person living in the area with a lower cost of living index has more buying power for their income.

However, there are many factors that affect how wealthy someone is:

1. Expenses. Whether "good" debt (i.e. home = assets, student loans = education to allow you to find better-paying jobs) or "bad" debt (i.e. credit cards where only the minimum is payed or a carrying balance exists from month to month), the lower your expenses, the farther your income goes.

2. Taxes. Whether federal/national, state/provincial, local/municipal, or some other tax, the lower the taxes, the farther your money stretches. With federal, state, and local, I tend to have about 25% of my paychecks taken up with taxes, which doesn't include the sales tax hits.

3. Multiple incomes. Having a spouse who works can be beneficial to your income, provided:
-- you split the household chores evenly (avoids nasty arguments, and you can't claim you've worked harder than your spouse when they've been gone just as long as you have all day; plus, with both of you gone, the house doesn't get as dirty)
-- you don't have children (unless they're not only old enough to go to school but also be left alone before/after school, or you can swing "free" babysitting from your relatives [who will generally make you pay in some non-monetary way], you generally end up spending 50% or more of the additional gross income on childcare costs, including the extra gas to drive there)
-- you're working for the right reasons. Some families need both people to work just to make ends meet. Others don't really need the extra income. In any case, it's always best to try and limit your dependence on the 2nd income as much as possible, and try to roll over the additional income into savings. We've done that for 6 years, and have managed to put aside savings that a) allowed us to pay off both cars early, b) paid off a student loan early, c) pay for a new transmission, new A/C compressor, and a new engine along the way, d) have money set aside for adoption, and e) help here and there while I was unemployed and pulling in crappy unemployment benefits.

As for my income on that site:

my personal income puts me in the top 5.99%. That sounds great, except I make $24,000 USD a year. Our household income from our tax returns last year put us at the top 0.959%, at $40,000 USD.

In perspective, though, US minimum wage ($5.25/hour, 2080 hours/year, for a grand total of $10,920 USD) is still in the top 11.59%.

Like someone else pointed out... it's just meant to shame you into donating money to the charity behind the site.
