Ron Hunt's friends and family have been calling him the "Miracle Man" ever since an 45-centimetre-long drill bit poked through his eye and out the back of his skull.

"It didn't seem possible for him to be alive, seeing him with a drill bit through his head," his nephew Ben Hunt said.

The construction worker from Truckee, California, lost an eye but survived the freak accident on August 15 with no brain damage after falling from a ladder and onto the drill.

The 3.8cm diameter chip auger drill bit was still in his head when his brother, Chris Hunt, and nephew, Ben, met him in a hospital emergency room in Reno, Nevada.

"The nurses braced us for it before we saw him," Ben Hunt told the Sierra Sun newspaper of Truckee.

"It didn't seem real - it seemed like a movie. I wasn't sure what to feel."

Doctors explained that the drill bit pushed his brain aside rather than pushing into it, which likely would have caused serious brain damage or death, Ben Hunt said.

While drilling above his head on August 15, the two-metre ladder Ron Hunt was standing on started to wobble so he tossed the drill aside - as construction workers are trained to do.

He then fell off the ladder face-first and onto the drill.

"By the time I was falling, and I let the drill go down, I was already on top of it," Ron Hunt told ABC's "Good Morning America" TV show today.

"I ran my hands up the drill bit, up to my eye, and put my other hand in the back of my head and felt it coming through the back of my head," he said.

"And that's where pretty much the shock set in."

He was taken by helicopter to Washoe Medical Centre in Reno.

After weighing their options, doctors essentially unscrewed the bit to remove it.

"We would have cut it off, but after a few minutes of drilling, we noticed that it was loose. And so we just put down our blade and twisted the bit," said Dr Paul Ludlow, the surgeon who performed the operation.

His nephew thinks he'll be able to laugh about it some day.

"It's just going to be one of those stories," Ben Hunt told the Sierra Sun.

"He'll joke around with his glass eye and pop it out."

Reminds me of that woman in the UK who got stabbed by a mugger with a 10" knife in the skull and simply pulled it out with no injury other than bleeding.

He is truly worthy of the Phineas Gage legacy.

The X-ray is almost certainly fake even if the accident was real.

Well, he was. The ladder wobbled and he threw it away so that he wouldn't hurt himself. Ironically thisis the one time out of a million where it did hurt him.

No point. He's used up three lifetimes' supplies of luck.

Like I said, it's almost certainly a fake. The drill bit appears to have been simply laid over a skull. It simply would have caused too much damage to be survivable, and you'll notice that there is no skull damage or cracking which is rather fucking unlikely.

Since the picture of him has a hat on, and no bulge in the bandage, which would be from the bit of the drill that they would not be able to cut off, combined with the laughably Photoshopped x-ray, I declare this a rather elaborate hoax.

They pulled the drill out, according to the article.

I can believe this. There was an incident like this here when my dad was young, was understandably all over the news back then. In a factory accident some guy had a relatively big iron bar shot through his head exactly as described here, and he walked into the hospital himself and gave the staff quite a shock, some of them fainted when they saw him. Lost his eye but no other damage.

Also, my best friend's grandfather got shot through his temple during the war, with the bullet exiting from the other side, and all he had was the scars to show for it, no damage. The doctors back then had told him he'd die or lose his sight, but neither happened.

Then there's the guy who, during WW2 jumped without a parachute from his bomber rather than burn to death survived with just a concussion and fractured ribs. He fell a fucking 4,500 m, or 15,000 feet, and walked away from it.

This kind of randomly unbelievable shit that has absolutely minuscule chances of coming about happens every now and then. Rarely, but it does happen from time to time.
