My question is this: what random shit do you buy that doesn't exactly have a use or purpose, but you buy anyway? Because you think you'll eventually use it for something, or because you just have to have it, or for some other reason...

I ask because, while I was working at the coffeehouse today (which is also a secondhand bookstore), I found a copy of The Tale of Peter Rabbit that I had to buy. It's a tiny little hardcover book (about four inches by three inches) with satin pages, colour illustrations, and it's entirely in Latin. I've never taken Latin, yet I felt this compulsion to own it.

So, what weird shit have you bought with no clear idea as to why?

Please don't tell me I'm the only person who does this...please...

Once came home from the city center with a packet of modelling clay and a number of small, poseable, plastic figurines of varying appearances. They lurk on my desk to this day.

Mr. T bobble head and Buddy Christ action figure. I may have just bought those because they were super-awesome. Or it may have been some weird random compulsion thing, almost like the store owner is hitting you with a mild form of mind-control radiation--not enough that you suspect anything once he releases you--just enough to get you to buy his things, and then you're free.

All the time, today I spend $20 on candy and cheese cake for others.

Butane mini-torches. Sure they're fun for burning stuff and setting magnesium on fire but I don't have anything useful to do with them. Well, astually burning stuff is fun, so thats a good use, ok I was wrong they're useful.

Play Doh and Crayola crayons. Every once in a while, I'll open one or the other and smell them.

Some souvieneirs such as pretrified rocks, for the sentimental value and shit. Besides, it's not as if you can find it in your backyard in New Jersey. Otherwise, I usually don't spend money on souveniers, because of the outrageous prices.

I still dont have a regular job so no frivelous spending for me. However, I did buy a PVC pipe cutter the other day to assist my work in a friends backyard. He thought it was so cool he offered to buy the tool from after Im done. ( Im just laying down some pipe and sprinklers.) A saw is way annoying to cut PVC with. A ten dollar cutting tool will seriously increase your productivity.

I did by a punch down tool about 5 months ago. It is used for telecom work. Phones, ethernet cables, patch panels, etc. I had not real use for it, until now. On Monday Im going to small office to add two new ethernet lines for them. Then the tool will be half paid off.

I bought some neato Orginial Star Wars Picture cards for Labor Day; not that I need them but it's good too have. Wish I jhhad enough for the orginial ANH poster.

I've got a Buddy Christ, a Futurama Brain Slug, a telescoping magnetic pick-up tool, a mini-torch, all kinds of crap.

I have a ton of tools and knives.... (It's not like I need more of them.)

My mom buys me little notebooks occasionally for no particular reason. Really small ones.

I make it a point to not buy anything that I have no use for. The only exception is stuff that I buy for my girlfriend, but then again she's never asked me to buy her something expensive and mostly useless...

Boxes of old comics.

Don't ask but I do say at a flea market or a yard sale, and for some reason feel not the least bit odd about doing so until afterwards. I mean heck sometimes I never touch or read them but instead they go straight into storage...till one day a year I go into the place to organize...and realize what they were.

Pins. The various little shirt/hat/whatever pins you find. Most of them are just sitting in a drawer, unused.

I guess I could pin some on my jacket when it starts to get cold out, but other than that...they just sit there.

I think I have about four 9/11 ones, five military ones, and some I'm not even sure where they came from.

Well, I once was in a music store to buy a CD, and pondered whether or not to buy a particular album... then I saw that it was published by "No Fashion Records" - and that meant I simply had to buy it.

Dragons. I love dragons.

I have three dragon posters: a picture of Shenlong that I cut out of a DBZ calander, a green western dragon breathing fire, and a red western dragon roaring.

I also have two dragon statues, a chinese dragon made of wood and painted blood-red with gems for eyes, and a multicolored western dragon sitting of a crystal and clutching a golden cup. (I intend to buy another soon)

On top of that, I have a dragon tshirt which I got from Universal Studios. It shows a dragon's face, divided down the center, with one side being blue and the other red/gold. The blue dreagon is breathing cold mist, while the red one breathes fire. The back of the shirt says "Dueling Dragons" which is the name of the roller coaster I got the shirt at.

The stuff I buy is not exactly random, but definitely with out usefull purpose.

I've got a growing collection of swords, daggers, and knives. Right not the collection stands at three swords, two nice daggers, and about a dozen differet knives. All of them are pointless and most are unbelievably expensive but I wanted them. So now, I have them. And of course my bedroom has so many weapons hanging on the walls it's starting to look like an armory.
