Observe this.
A list of violent crimes involving swords. Some of them are funny.
Some examples.
Liverpool, UK. July 2001. A 37-year-old schizophrenic man wearing pajamas was shot dead by police while wielding a samurai sword and running amok through a crowd. After he refused to drop the blade he was waving at them. (source: The Guardian).
Cheltenham, England, Jan. 2000. A deranged man with a samurai sword attacked a British Member of Parliament, slashing his arm and then stabbing him through the body, killing him, before attacking his assistant who ran to the defense. The second man suffered severe lacerations. (source: AP)
Parkland, WA. June 2001. With a samurai sword gripped firmly in two hands, police say Herbert Roland took a batter's stance, cocked back the 2 1/2-foot blade and prepared to swing at the sheriff's officer standing 4 feet away. Three bullets fired from the officer's .45-caliber sidearm disagreed with the attempt and the 56-year-old former Marine, died at the scene. (Seattle Post-Intelligencer).

[Weepy Liberal] It's from your article that Samuri swords are a menace to society and a danger to all. BAN THEM! For the children! [/Weepy Liberal]
Still, it seems strange that so many used/chose a samuria sword. Wonder why that is.

Well thousands of them made there way back to the UK, US and commonwealth nations courtesy of the IJA and more recently movies have made them very popular.

I would have one in a house. Maybe even in a car. Along with my handgun.
Just to be safe. You know.
EDIT: For the sword, I think some people use katanas cause they're either more popular or cause they're better for slashing action, which is easier than trying to accurately stab someone. I think.

Imperial Japanese Army. The service issued samurai swords to all its officers, who had a habit of leading massed charges against US forces, which turned, into bloodbaths, often for both sides. However a side effect of that and other Pacific combat was US and other troops got lots of captured swords to send home. Though ironically most went home in the hands of rear area personal, who traded rare foodstuffs and other luxury items to front line troops in exchange. Quite a few where also picked up by medics, generally when they where working on a guy who got shoot while doing something stupid to get a sword.

For slashing....Katanas are usually a much better weapon than anything else because of the edge they carry along the blade...assuming it's well made that is. Blade on blade work with a katana can be downright madness if you aren't skilled enough to use the blade...being only one edged.

My favourite:
At 9:30 am a 30-year old man with a samurai sword and wearing a trenchcoat entered a large grocery store where he was formerly employed as a bagger and slashed five people, killing two former co-workers and wounding three customers. The man, a diagnosed schizophrenic, caused 40 to 50 shoppers to flee in panic before eventually being shot dead by police when confronted. His mother described him as a sword collector and fan of the "Highlander" films and TV shows.

A mate of my brother has his father having a walking stick with a sword concealed inside which he bought after getting smacked against a shop counter during a robbery which left one of his legs with a limp.
Seems swords are quite the chic item for street wary psychos though.

It Takes a Thief...or justice is blind
A thief died trying to flee an art museum in Bonn, Germany. Peter Grüber panicked after being surprised by a security guard at the Klausmann Museum of Art and when he raced around a corner, impaled himself upon a 4ft-long sword held by a statue of a blindfolded soldier. The exhibit is called "The Weapon of Justice". (Guardian, 29 June 2000).

Ah, poetic justice.
