Hopefully public opinion will backlash at them.

The fact that they've been reduced to suing preteens is hilarious.

It's limbo, RIAA style! The lower you go to force people to spend $20 on a CD with one or two good songs, the higher your score!

Waiting for Deadheads vs. RIAA

erm could someone remove the smelly hippie (sir, that's one of the band members, what are they doing on the defense table, well sire they apparently gave permission for their fans to make the bootleg recordings, they can't do that!, SUE THEM, erm sire, their contract and self ownership says they can, milord, *RIAA Jabba cat backhands lawyer*

Why'd the Deadheads do that? Is there an article you can link to?

And didn't Iron Maiden say something along those lines?

Oy, this really makes the RIAA look respectable. When you can't stop something you don't like, go sue a 12 year old!!!

And this makes the 3rd thread on this subject.

I was just imagining the possibilities present the Greatful Dead allways allowed taping during their concerts, they actually got into a suit with the RIAA & Ticicktron shortly before Jerry Garcia died. Basically their stance, was Fuck You, it's our fans you can piss off.

In all fairness to the RIAA, I rather doubt they knew how old this person was.

They settled. Her single mother living in New York City in a non-rent-controlled apartment will pay $2000 to the RIAA. That money will be given to the artists that she stole from, as they are all running desperately low on paper currency to wipe their asses with.

With the number of teens on the internet, you'd think they would have expected that sooner or later one of those IP numbers they were investigating would belong to a kid.

What? Settled!? I thought the mother swore to get a lawyer and fight back! Do you have a link?

Im not surprised they were quick to settle. This is a major embarasement for the RIAA and they want this case to be settled, buried and forgetten as quickly as possible.

Rock bands? Using paper money to wipe their asses? Yeah, a handful have enough cash to do that; the rest are out of luck and could make more money at a regular job.

I guess you haven't seen this? (Figures are taken from producer Steve Albini's essay on the matter)

Sounds like a good reason to break the RIAA.

So from a $20 CD;
  • $14.542 goes to the record company
  • $0.082 goes to the individual band members

What the fuck...I really wonder how people are gonna feel about the "poor RIAA" when they see that chart. It pretty much killed any bit of infinitesimal sympathy I had on the matter...

Well, if you want Steve Albini's full essay, it's here.

I suppose that's the figure for the profits of records sold by big-label record companies. What about "indie rock"?
