Would people really treat someone this way?

I'm sure a few here have seen the movie Phenomenon, the one with John Travolta.

If someone like the main character were to actually in real-life appear, would the local public treat him like how they treated John Travolta's character in the movie?

Well, if someone you knew suddenly became a genius and had inexplicable TK powers, wouldn't you be a little freaked out?

Actually, I'd suspect that he'd be called a demon and people would be trying to kill him. However, it's been awhile since I've seen the movie.

I doubt it. It hasn't been the Middle Ages for a long time...

I think the movie depicts how people would treat someone like that fairly accurately. Some would see it as an oddity, others would see him as a freak, others some kind of savior, etc...

People fear what they don't understand.

And John Travolta acting intelligently is something that everybody doesn't understand. :D

Depends on who it was that I knew.

I actually do think that the movie did potray how alot of people would react to him, however I still think that there would be some people who would try to kill him, or at least calling for his death. (People afterall still kill each other over race and sexual orientation - what would those same people do when they perceive something as outright witchcraft? Keep in mind that he displayed levels of TK far beyond that of which can dismissed as a simple sleight of hand or wires, IIRC up to pulling apart a heap of scrap metal.) Even if the number isn't high, it would be far more troublesome that way. It wouldn't take too much either - a religious fanatic, a drunk that gets a bad run during gambling (I'm losing! It must be HIS fault! *hic*) etc.

I don't know about the local public, but on the federal level, he'd simply mysteriously disappear one dark night...
