I had a 12-tissues-soaked-right-through-every-square-cm nosebleed a few hours ago. I counted the tissues.
Anyone else get really bad nosebleeds like this?

I get nosebleeds every so often, and occasionally I'll get one that sounds roughly that bad.
Most of the time I just keep my head back or lie down so it just goes down my throat. We don't want to waste any of it now, do we?

That can easily result in it going into your lungs, causing something like drowning, or far more prolonged and possibul requiring a hospital trip and a suction hose being directed into the affect lung to suck out the blood to avoid an infection.
In short, lean forward.

Perhaps I should clarify a little. I let it build up a bit in my mouth, then I swallow it. There is no way it could enter my lungs.

Actually it still can, ever drink or eat something and start coughing/coking, that's because some of it started to get into your lungs and you body does not fucking want it in there. However since blood is thick and heavy its more dangerous then say a glass of water.

but its blood, so it wont cause respiratory problems, just be uncomfortable. the blood will absorb oxygen from the air and the lungs will absorb oxygen from the blood. dolphins and deep-sea-divers occasionally experience this. it prevents them from imploding.

Hmm, that might explain why he chokes while drinking/eating about twice a day...
And to the rest of you: maybe your noses wouldn't bleed so often if you kept your fingers ouf of there!

When I get nosebleeds, they usually aren't that bad.
This does not count for the fact that there's bleeding from the back of my nasal passages from minor surgery from around eight or so years back. They tend to come out as mucus-covered clots.

Do NOT swallow blood. It can and will make you gag which will lead to blood inhalation, or a very bad case of diarrhoea. Inhaling blood is not a good thing, no matter what others say, it is a substance that will reduce airflow to the circulatory system by coating the bronchioles etc. It will be dissolved eventually, but you'd suffocate long before.
In short, my mother advises lean forward as I always learnt, she's a nurse so I try not to dispute her advice. Unless it's clean the bedroom.

No offence, but that's grade A bollocks. Whoever told you that obviously expects blood to be a good thing even
outside its medium.

The last time I had a nosebleed was several years ago.

Yeah, I've had nosebleeds like that. I had a cold and I blew my nose too hard. I pinched off my nose but for some reason I couldn't seem to be able to breathe through my mouth. I gagged and threw up my chicken soup into the bathroom sink. I swallowed a lot blood before I threw up, and it was just a huge bloody, mucus-y mess. It seemed like half an hour before it stopped bleeding, but it might have been closer to ten minutes.

I used to get nosebleeds when blowing my nose every few months. And in school, too. And it had to be in the beginning of the school day, and not in some boring class, or a class I had a big test I didn't study for in.

Blame anatomy, the nasal passage is well vascularised in order to supply you with nice and warm fresh air, this of course means the blood vessels are very close to the epithelium and can rupture easily.

I tend to get a ton of nosebleeds, but that is usually because i have bad allergies and i cant stop sneezing.

What's really fun is to fill a sink partway with water and let you nose bleed into it. The blood makes cool patterns as it drops into the water, and I find it rather fun to watch.

The first and only time I can recall my nose bleeding is when I hit a slide face-first whilst running (don't ask).

I used to scratch the inside of my nose in my sleep.
VERY HARD. Sniffling hurt, and nosebleeds would inevitably follow.
