Fining for jaywalking is stupid. I jaywalk 5 times a week from the bus to my house. Unless you're dumb enough to jaywalk in a major road--in which case you've lined yourself up to be the next porud recipient of a Darwin Award--you're not hurting, or even bothering for that matter, anyone.

Sometime i too did it but i never jaywalked outside the intersection or on the red light,i guess those who recieved a ticket were the usual bunch of morons who act like cars should stop to let the pass.

Everybody knows they can ticket you for it. Ninty-nine times out of a hundred you're not going to get caught and that's fine, but when you do, don't bitch about it.

If you're going to anything, be smart about it! That includes jaywalking!
Wait for the cars to pass before you go! Or wait until no one's moving because they're all stuck at a red light! Duh!

What does "jaywalking" exactly mean, anyway? And is it related to "joyriding" in any way?

We don't have such a silly law in the UK, I almost thought a mate in the US was pulling my leg when he mentioned jaywalking.
I think getting honked at and nearly being ran over is a good enough punishment.

Jaywalking is crossing the street where you`re not supposed to cross, and like i wrote above crossing on the red light.

Where I live, sometimes it's the only way to get across the road.
I remember how I scared Nitram the first time I dragged him across the road on the green light with cars at the far stoplight gunning in our direction.

I only Jaywalk on major roads when
A. There aren't many cars.
B. They are a block away and driving slow enough for me to cross.
C. Cars Stuck in traffic.
D. Cars Stuck in traffic.
E. Cars Stuck in Traffic.
I jaywalk once or twice right in front of a police car and they did nothing.
Cyaround,

I hate assholes like that. Thats why I don't even stop for them. Now if they're making an honest effort to get across, the road, thats one thing. (and I'll gladly slow down for them since I've been in that situation once or twice) However, when some asshole takes his sweet time walking across the damn road, I will not stop. I'll swerve at the last second and blare my horn, but I will not stop.

jaywalking is the most stupid law, apart from some old by laws, that i have ever heard about... do they not think people can judge for themselves when its safe to cross the street?

Some people need this law cause they can`t judge by themself if its safe to cross.

well, at least most Montrealais have the courtesy to beep before running a red light. oddest thing i've seen. it's like saying "hi officer! i'm running the red light now wheeee!"

The worste case of running the red light is when a cop does it,and most of the time its not for a real emergency unless you count no more donuts in the box.

If a jaywalking law says that any crossing of the road outside designated areas is an offense, that law is worth shit. The way it works here is that you're allowed to cross a road or street anywhere you damn well please, but at designated crossings you need to observe the lights (obviously). Crossing outside designated crossings also leaves the driver far less liable for damages than if he happened to run you over at a crossing. I often cross streets outside designated areas to avoid taking long detours, but I treat any and all car drivers as murderous lunatics by default, so I make damn sure there either aren't any cars coming, or that I have enough safety distance if I start to cross. And I always cross at a brisk walk at a minimum, usually at a jog or run. I don't cross against red lights unless there is no traffic or I know the light cycle thoroughly.

Montreal jaywalkers are like lemmings. You'll get a green, but some jaywalker decides to rush across to beat the light. Of course the person behind him figures this is a good idea, and the person behind him, and since the intersection is already full of pedestrains... everyone might as well just go... You usually have to stick you car right into the pedestrians until one of them is smart enough to stop at risk of walking into your car.

There are a couple streets here that is a major crossing in which even if it's green people will cross anyway and that's in hordes of 15+at a time heh. Those Lemmings would be fine there
