Certain Sigs

Certain Sigs it seems are reporting your ISP, Ip Addy and the software you are using. I don't like this. I get the impression that these details are being reported to a database somewhere. I remember certain trolls using them before. Can the people using them please remove them?

Their threat rating is a resound 0.

Every time you go to a webpage that information is transmitted. Every time an image is accessed you can trace it back.

There's nothing to fear from those images. If there really was a threat they'd be using a 1 pixel transparent GIF in their .sig, not a visible banner image - and you'd be none the wiser.

These sigs are just signposts reflecting all the information you're really giving out. It's like asking someone to not quote from your posts because it makes you think they're stalking you. Yeah, I find it annoying as hell, and I wanna know how the hell it's done, and yeah, I do find it scary that I'm giving that much info out, but there's not much that I can do with my present database of knowledge :?

You're giving that same information to me everytime you post. Don't worry so much about it. There's nothing to be scared of.

They're actually pretty cool. If I remember correctly, they aren't even getting the info, more like just mirroring it back at your computer.

Um...maybe I won't do anything to piss you off...

And I'm used to being a mod on PHP boards, my friend ran his own before he cancelled them due to school work.

He's gotcha there on both counts, man. Make that sig smaller, as it is mine's almost too big :-\

OK, some clarification:

1) This information is already being recorded into a database, because that's how webservers work. The only difference is that you can see it now.

2) A troll visiting the page will see his ISP, IP address, and useragent, not yours.

Same here. Every single IP address digit is wrong (last time I checked, anyway).

Do you use dialup?

I would imagine being behind certain firewalls would cause this sort of thing.

I'm working on shrinking the text, but commands are the problem. I'm not an armchair general, thank you.

Think the IP on me is wrong too, but then I'm using dialup for now, and I've got ZoneAlarm Pro running.

Some people go through proxies (they might not even be aware of it, if their ISP has set up a transparent routing proxy), so their IP address is advertised as the address of the proxy, not their IP address on their ISP's internal network.

This is actually quite common (for example, all AOL members go through proxies).

And in case he doesn't check PM's: Admiral Valdemar, your signature is force formatting every damn thread you post in and it is greatly annoying me.

Yeah, what are they gonna do, take the IP in the image and DoS it? ;) :P (reminds me of that User Friendly comic strip where that one chick tells those script kiddies her IP is 127.0.0.1 and they all get knocked off the net. )

I hope you're joking. 127.0.0.1 is the loopback IP address. It always points to your own machine.
