Hey kids, college plus work equals no time for recent posts, but I have a day off so here I am.
Anyway, yesterday as part of some Film Studies work, we had to write an essay about what the word "Hollywood" made us think about. Now thats pretty easy on a simple level: films.
Does anyone think anything else when they hear "Hollywood" mentioned?

A sewage outlet with the occasional gem that got flushed down the sink by mistake.

Nice out look, do you mean the film industry though, or have you frequented a Hollywood sewage outlet?

I mean that the film industry pretty much churns out shit, but there's the oocasional good film in there.

I work at Hollywood Video, so there's quite a bit that comes to mind when I hear "Hollywood". Examples:
"We are Hollywood. We are entertainment."
"Hollywood is dedicated to exceptional guest experiences delivered with genuine warmth and friendliness."
And plenty of other stupid-ass corporate catch-phrases, false promises, and "paradigms". I think of all that, plus my paycheck.

Hollywood:
My mispent youth.
Mass alchohol consumption.
Get off the 405 at La Cienega, or it'll take forever to get there.
Raji's
The Odyssey
The summer of 1984.
Somehow, I never got in trouble.
Haunted Garage
The Dickies
Celebrity Skin
And lots of sex.

Glitz... Airheads... The worst part of a highschool culture--meaning everything is based on popularity, or so I hear.
Hollywood produces great blockbusters that I like to watch, but the good films come from elsewhere.

I often free associate "Hollywood" with "Peckerwood".
Also, isn't Hollywood Blvd known for having lots of hookers on it?

The sizzle without the steak.
Glamour.
Shiny, beautiful, totally brainless people.
Ridiculously ostentatious, obscenely narcissistic displays of wealth.
Fake tits.
Nauseatingly self-aggrandizing awards shows.

You forgot.... Scientology!!!
Personally, upon reading how many celebs are Scientologists - I'm afraid that Hubbard's get-rich-quick scheme would develop into the Hollywood equivalent of the Freemasons. (if the PETA haven't became that)

I hadn't realized Scientology had been around as long as it has. I was watching
The Howling (early 80's) and one of the people (werewolves) in the colony mentioned Scientology as one of the things she had tried that hadn't worked for her. I found that line rather funny now where I never paid much attention to it in the past.

Well, "Dianetics" was published in the 1950s IIRC and the movement itself slowly started during that timeframe. It's just in the 1970s it became trendy.

Clueless (as in no fucking clue what the real world or real lives are like)
Bitchy stars that can't figure out what they want (i.e. first they complain about how their careers suck and they don't get enough press, then they complain when they make the covers of the tabloids, news, celebrity news shows like Access Hollywood, or other news outlets)

Wouldn't that be a really short essay? Or, is it an exercise in making one paragraph of info fill 10 pages?
...about what the word "Hollywood"
Thanks to a Seinfeld episode, any word association immediately makes me think of tuberculosis. So the word Hollywood makes me think of tuberculosis.

I think of huge corprate take overs and the old good films like 2001 Space Odyssey God I wish they would slow down for a change and give us good actor time. Like Road to Perdition. So many people out there think that is a slow movie. Me that one was sort of fast. 2001 was slow. Movies go way to fast these Day's and uses sublimnal advertising.

Nah, not so much anymore. They cracked down on it quite a bit to make it more tourist friendly IIRC. However, Santa Monica Blvd. has quite a bit of action. Except the girls aren't really girls.
