I heard this commercial on the radio while driving home from work. Enjoy.

OFFICE: Hello, Work Placement Services?

CALLER: Hi, I'd like to apply for a job.

OFFICE: Well, what kind of position would you opt for? We have secretarial, clerical, data processing...

CALLER: I'd like something in Engineering or the transporter room. I understand those warp drives pretty well.

OFFICE: Uh, right. I don't believe we have anything relating to that-

CALLER: Oh come on, it's not like I'm asking for Captain!

OFFICE: Right. Sir, did you finish High School?

CALLER: Uh...my federation does not recognize your educational system.

OFFICE: I see. Are you by any chance bilingual?

CALLER: Yeah! I speak fluent Martian, and a little Venutian.

OFFICE: Well then, hang on a second and I'll connect you to someone who speaks those languages.

CALLER: Sure!

*click. Dial tone*

CALLER: Hello?

VOICEOVER: High School dropouts earn 42% less per year than graduates. Stay in school. This commercial brought to you by-

At this point, I was laughing too hard to hear the rest.

Snicker. That 4 year (or even 2 year) piece of paper should always give you a leg up in pay.

*Should*...

Seeing how worthless High School diplomas are outside of the U.S, that's saying something...

College degrees are starting to become worthless outside the USA, I hear.

Ah, the irony. Remember when Trek used to inspire people to go to school and get a college degree. Times sure have changed. :P

Trek has changed. Its viewer demographic has changed significantly, and it caters mostly toward adolescent boys now. Small wonder they make fun of that on the radio.

Not everywhere. Some colleges are still pretty well-respected. I hear that Japan, or at least one of their language programs likes Berkeley and the University of Virginia for some reason.

This is why I'm now staying on to do a masters instead of just a BSc (Hons) in Biology. Maybe even a Ph.D if I have the cash left and no job offers.

They speak Tagalog on Venus.

I do know that here at UT we have a large study abroad program and many foreign students, so our degrees couldn't be too worthless outside of the US...

 The Phillipines colonized Venus? That's just...weird...

Pretty funny commercial, though. Star Trek does seem to have gone from a relatively thoughtful commentary on humanity using aliens to an all-flash, no substance show.

I remember hearing that last night. That was funny as hell!! Think they got DarkStar for that? :D

The funny thing is, one actually *might* be able to make a living if he or she can speak fluent Klingon. I hear a lot of insane asylums are looking to hire someone who can because a lot of the crazies speak only Klingon. I'd still prefer a college diploma, though.

Hot damn...anyone know how hard it is to learn Klingon?

Isn't that how DarkStar got his job?

Probably not too hard. The Trekkies who created the full language probably spoke English and probably subconsciously modeled it after English.

Trekkies didn't create it, it was created for the Third ST movie by a Dr. Marc Okrand. It's a viable language all its own.

It's actually an officially recognized language, isn't it?
