It's unfortunate that WIG has proven to be a failed technology for various reasons. Currently it looks like only the tiniest of WIG aircraft will be viable within then ext couple decades, the big ones have too many control problems. Not to mention corrosion and same very demanding takeoff and landing conditions, basically glass flat calm seas.

However the tens of billions need to make it work are not worth while, the US, the only really big customer for military WIG aircraft, would be better served by more C-17's and a swarm of SL-7's bought for the same cost.

And thats what where going to see.

Nonetheless, there are applications for even small WIG craft

The biggest would be a personal and pleasure craft, as simple as something made in someone's backyard, as complex as a modern day general aviation aircraft.

Another possible application is for bush use as an alternative to a floatplane, and enviromental and other specialty uses.

Other than that, however, I don't really see anything.

Some consideration has been given to using them as search and rescue aircraft for coast guard services, China is currently working on such an aircraft. But the problem is, in the conditions when you most need S&R, WIG can't even take off.

We shall see where the small ones go.
