It seems like a good political strategy. If something goes wrong, the president can't be blamed, and that's one less issue for 2004. However, that might destroy the Galactic Empire Party's effort to win the presedential election.

So? You've seen too much "rebel" propaganda! The Galactic Empire isn't evil, merely ruthlessly efficient. There may be some few individuals who try to in the Senate who try to subvert and twist the Empire to their own less than savory ideas but Vader and the Emperor will deal with them in due time.
