programming anyone?

Anyone here a programmer? I saw a book today in Barnes and Noble on C++, didn't have enough money, but has anyone here ever made a game say the size of starcraft or Neverwinter Nights. I have several ideas for games (none of which I will explain here) but what kind of crew do you need and what kind of work needs to be done, I know you need artists/programmers, organizers who put together the story and sequence of events, just how large of a crew though. Was that game spermicide where do you have to condom-net all the sperm and other stuff made by some person/persons rather than a company?

Perhaps you are a little over your head on this. Game programming is the some of the most sophisticated programming you can do. It requires in depth knowlege of physics and advanced design concpets. Your best bet is to get what they call a game engine, a free one at that, and build from it.

You are also going to need a book on directX or openGL, I suggest DirectX, fewer bugs, better support.

if you want to add in netowrking support I suggest you get a book on deigning networking protocols.

I suggest coming up with a really good idea and seeign if you can build a team based on that.

If you really want to get into the gaming industry, join a few free games projects and work really hard on them, for a year or 2 to completetion. repeat this a couple of times and you will ahve enough to gain a junior position at even a company like Bungie or blizzard.

from this point of just learning C++, you have about 3 -4 years of learning ahead of you to be able to pull this off.

Good luck man, but this is not a shallow endeavor. Its allot of hard brain straining work.

All you need is a venture capitalist or two with deep pockets and lots of optimism, a staff of highly skilled programmers that you can lure to your company with low salaries but generous stock options and company perks, and ... oh, wait a minute. That was last year.

All of that has collapsed into a big pile of shit now. Well, never mind then.

No no, you got it all wrong, give them free pizza, and hire a bunch of hot chicks, and pay them to act like "code groupies". Have them fawn over the prosepective game programmer to work there, pulled into a supply closet and give him a bj.

He will work for $30k after something like that.

And the girl doesn't have to be that hot either.... (though its nice to just have 1 really hot 1 around)

Programming is over rated, I took a year from my career to get Microsoft Certification in Visual InterDev 6.0 . Where am i now you may ask? Working as an Admin Assistant which is exactly what i was doing before i took the year off to get my MCP. WYSIWYG programs are killing me, any trained chip can build a Website, as for computer game programming, get 10 years in college under your belt, fall to you knees and pray to your god of choice and MAYBE they will let you work as a coffee boy in a software house.

Perhaps you should think about getting some more marketable skills

Oracle has a great deal on getting certified with thier software. 5k to get an Oracle Certifies professional's License. Depending on how you do it, it will take a couple of months to a year.

Yah I myself am finnally taking the time to get certified in Oracle dbase administration. I have been working with 7i and 8i for ohh a couple of years now. So I am currently working my way through to get Masters certified, so I can add another $25-50/hr to my consulting rate. I really want to get int othe more abstract data wharehousing/clustering, thats where everything is headed.

Truth be told, I wouldn't and don't recommend getting or using oracle for anything. I use MySql (www.mysql.org) , its free, and its up there with oracle for speed. I figure if there are so many fools willing to chuck away a few million on software features they will never use, why am I so insistant on trying to save them money. I might as well nail the fools for everything they are worth. I used to be so idealistic, but I am growing more evil over time.
