Are you a Godfather or Scarface kind of guy?

Post by Darth Wong »

In the world of gangster movies, there are many pretenders, but there are only two real contenders for the throne. The Godfather, and Scarface. Both tell the tale of gangsters, but they are vastly different worlds. One is the world of the Mafias, with its honour rules, and the other is the world of the cocaine kings, with its reckless brutality.

So today, as copies of the long-awaited anniversary edition of Scarface finally flood the market, are you a Scarface guy, or a Godfather guy? When it comes time to pull out a quote from a gangster movie to use in conversation (something that every man in North American must do), do you quote Corleone? Or Montana?

For me Corleone...as much as I love Montana(and of course the ever lovable "Meet my little friend!!")...I prefer the Corleone style.

"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse" amongst other is something I still love of those movies(though why 3...urgh....just stop at two)

Godfather, of course.

A line from Scarface I've heard referenced in far too many rap songs:

"All I got in this world is my balls and my word, and I don't break 'em for nobody."

VH1 actually did a documentary on how Scarface has influenced hip-hop, going back 10-15 years. It was fun seeing all the references - visuals from the movie, lines (obviously), Scarface memorabilia in rappers' homes, etc.

I'm not much of a fan of gangster/mafia/crime films, and have seen less than ten minutes of The Godfather and Scarface combined.

Monty Python is more quotable, anyway. ;)

Pulp Fiction. But between the two of them, Godfather.

I'm afraid your status as an American male is in doubt if you don't watch The Godfather and Scarface.

I also quote Goodfellas from time to time, and I've made Robert DeNiro's trademark "lil' bit" a part of my vocabulary.

Both are worth seeing, even if you aren't into the genre.

Besides, Scarface lays claim to what has to be the most oft-quoted line in the history of the universe. "Say hello to my little friend!"

I believe I've already lost such status when I openly admitted to buying a doll about a month ago. :P

But with all honesty, I've never felt the need to prove or defend the status of my masculinity when it has been questioned...

 Damn. I've actually seen them, at least... They're worth watching, but not my style, either.. I just don't like 'em.

Godfather, absolutely. Though you're forgetting Goodfellas. "What, you think I'm funny? Funny how? Funny like a clown? I make you laugh?"

Don't get me wrong, Scarface was good. But Italians are the original gangsters.

Goodfellas rocked.

I've seen nothing of Godfather or Scarface.

Both are probably overrated but if you ask me, i found the Godfather to be a really dull and boring italian wankfest. Godfather II is so much better.

But out of the two, definitly Scareface. Michael Corleon's restaurant assasination and baptism massacre is no comparison to the chainsaw scene and Pacino's final "say hello to my little friend" shootout.

I am more of a Howard Hawks (Scarface I, White Heat) or Orson Wells kinda guy.

Nothing beats a manipulative slime line Harry Lime, or James Cagney with a tommy gun.

Funny this is brought up. Since last week when I tried to rent Scarface, I've seen so many references to it and times it's been brought up. And to put my internet name to shame, I also have never seen it. Fortunatly, I've read much about it (actually, just a few hours ago) so I know what's going on.

Godfather kicks ass, however. In the restaurant restroom up until fairly recently I thought that was the blood rushing through his head from all the adrenaline.

"Do you renounce Satan and his works?"

"I do."

BAM!
...This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old...ultraviolence.

Surprisingly, people do that when I say I haven't seen The Postman.
