WTF is this sticker?

Since the
"OBEY" sticker started appearing all over the country, various people have decided that weird, attention-getting stickers with no apparent meaning can be quite a bit of fun, or advertise a product (if someone takes the time to look into whatever slogan or name is on them). Here's one that I find a bit creepy, and have heard nothing about. Sorry for the image quality, but I couldn't keep the Clie still:

Does anyone know what it is, besides a creepy-looking priest-type figure?

No...

That's exactly what I thought it was, though..

Wouldn't a sticker with the word "obey" on it be just a bit suspicious?

Yes. The point of it was to get people to take notice of their surroundings a bit. As the sticker itself has no meaning (apparent or otherwise), the impression it gives depends on the person. One person will think it's a band or a clothing company (they eventually started making t-shirts, but not for years after they started printing the stickers), another will think it's a cult or subversive political organization.

Looks kind of Japanese to me.
If so, then it most likely doesn't mean anything, and is purely just a character that has no message or context attatched to it.

I've seen posters vaguely like that in Hayward. They were 8.5"x11" white paper, probably made on computer. They hade a couple words, usually "BELY" or "BLOAT" on them as well as what I think were big Wingdings characters. It's reassuring to get confirmation that they were probably meaningless.

I'm reminded of a news story a few months back about a Catholic priest who'd been charged with molestation and hid from the law for a number of years. After he was arrested, they were interviewing one of his neighbors. Her statement was priceless.
"He seemed like a really nice guy, never bothered anyone. I had no idea he was...a priest!"
I fucking love it. She said it with revulsion of the sort usually reserved for "Neo-Nazi" or "axe murderer."

The Obry Stickers may come from an old movie..."They Live" Really cool flick where rowdy roddy piper finds some sunglasses that allow him to see things as they really are...The basic premise is this: The world you see around you isn't really whats there, billboards and signs and TV all have hidden messages in them...OBEY Being the most prevalent. aliens are here on earth and are working dilligently to take it over. John Carpenters best work, IMHO (Well, close to, anyway)

if you think a movie like They Live! is old, then you are very young...

Regardless, Could this be the case? That the Obey stickers are a reference to that? Only thing I can think of.

I thought that 'priest' sticker was a veiled reference to Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' until I saw the Japanese influence in it. Who knows really?.

According to the
site, the sticker started out as a sticker of Andre the Giant. They later stylized it and added "obey" (and "giant" in some cases to make it stand out more. Certainly the font is the same as in "They Live." But many of them don't say anything now. There are a lot of variations on the same image of Andre the Giant. You can see them at the site.

Perhaps you need to be on LSD to understand what it means or something. If that's not the case, then it's probably 'shrooms or paint thinner.
