Stupid Taxi Drivers

Okay, I'm really pissed off. I just had the worst expierence in a taxi of my life, and I want to know if you guys think this was fair or not.
I arrived at the local airport and needed to take a cab home. This was a small, private airport so they didn't have cabs on standby. Turns out there was another couple that needed a ride as well, so the cab company asked me if they could send one cab instead of two. I agreed and went out front to meet them.
I saw the couple waiting by the curb and asked them where they were going. Turns out they lived about halfway between the airport and my house so we agreed that it made sense that they would pay what was on the meter when we got to their house and I would pick up the rest.
Anyways so then the cab picks us up, and takes us to the couple's house. They pay the cabbie and then he drives off to my place. I notice he hasn't reset the meter, but I don't say anything as I figure he just had to keep it on to count it as one trip.
When we get to my house, the cabbie then asks me for the FULL amount on the meter. Flabbergasted, I explain to him that the couple already paid him for his trip to their house and that we were sharing a cab. He says that the cab company has a very specific policy about this and that I have to pay the full amount since it was only a convenience to me that they sent a single cab. I wasn't about to take this obvious attempt at thievery so I spent about ten minutes yelling at the cabbie about how this was the stupidest thing I had ever heard and I wasn't going to pay it.
Eventually he tells me that unless I want him to drive off with my bags in the trunk, I should fork over the full amount. I was about five seconds away from decking him, but I kept my cool and just paid him the money instead of commiting a felony. Then I went to my computer and filed a complaint with the BBB.
Has anyone else had an experience like this? Does this sound even remotely fair?
