I tried to start a sock puppet account now, and I noticed two things:

If you are visually impaired or cannot otherwise read this code please contact the Administrator for help.

Okay... and now for my question.

My only e-mail account is this hotmail one: yt300000@hotmail.com
My dad won't let me use his to create a sock puppet. Would I be allowed to set up a sock puppet account without paying up, since I'm already a member?

....Er.... isn't the making of sockpuppet accounts... frowned upon?

The only sock puppet I remember seeing around here was RayCav.

A: It's a secondary account of some one already registered that's hidden from the general user poplutation. Secondary accounts, both hidden and open, are permitted. But abusing this is good way to go yourself banned, see Demios Anomaly (Here) for proof. And remember, the mods know. We always know.

Many mods have sockpuppets, mainly for security reasons or board related matters. Normal users can in principle have one, but it ought to be identified correctly has a sockpuppet and you'll be walking on thin ice. Any attempt to spam/troll/whatever with the sockpuppet means instant death.

And if you can't get yourself a second mail account, then you'll do better in forgetting the idea.

So I should put "YT300000's sock puppet" in the puppet's sig?

Yes, if you really want to create one.

I frankly think they ought to be forbidden for all but mods, and that mod sockpuppets should be named "Colonel Orlik 2" or "fgalkin 2" or something, but thats just me.

Sometimes the mods do need secret sockpuppets (for example, it's very easy to lock my Olrik account. It's just a matter of feeding the wrong password in 15 minutes intervals). If the reason to have the account is safe/easy access at public places, then I fully agree with you that they must be properly identified (and they are).

Didn't some mods use sockpuppets to impersonate rabid Trekkies a while back?

And didn't Demios have over a dozen sock puppets, literally? I can think of Manji, Acclamator, Long Wang, Gunner, Bastard, and Jean Paul off of the top of my head, but he probably had more.

I suppose one could go to those f*ckmicrosoft.com sites or other hate sites, which give you a vanity email address which forwards to your real one. I don't know if Wong frowns upon this... I suppose you could bribe him.

On second thought, screw the sock puppet idea.

Good idea, because normal users probably won't get a sockpuppet without a damn good reason. I myself have two sockpuppets. All for damn good reasons, as you all can probably guess.

Since IP addresses can be traced a sockpuppet would not stay hidden for long. Of course if someone intended to play outside the rules there are other more malicious ways. Stardestroyer.net does have it's share of security flaws...

Emphesis mine

Is that a threat junior? We've fought off many a troll and we've got better security than most boards.

Yes, yes, of course you do... Because you're the Big Cool Badass Supermod and you say so. :P

But, seriously, if they're the two I remember, they are for a good purpose... But what do you care of my opinion? (You will, when I finally pay Mike $1,000,000 and become an Admin... :D )

And we all know the story of my "sockpuppet that's not really a sockpuppet" account. :P And if you don't, shame on you. :)

But here's a question: y'all (Mods/Supermods/Admins, IOW, those that actually matter :) ) don't mind if I bring him out for stuff like April 1st and/or SDNet's Bday (assuming it goes on like last time) do you?

Eh, I believe the real problem with most sock puppets is because the person has a ulterior motive of no good.

Rogue's as well a couple others don't have a sock puppet as much as a left over account.

A few others use there for other duties or better yet for public computers.

Nah, it's a fairly common php bb style though, there's bound to be scripts that take advantage of it. And we did get boned bad when TK losers hijacked phong's account too, remember?
