For those of you who don't know them Apocalyptica are a four piece cello group that play metal songs, mostly Metallica, on their cellos.

Do you think this counts as classical music or metal/rock music?

As a Finn, this certainly caught my attention. I had no idea that they had any popularity abroad, unlike HIM or Nightwish.

I only found them because i'm a cello player myself. I listened to Metallica's S&M album and wondered if i could find cello versions of their songs. I found Apocalyptica and i'm glad i did.

Are they Big in Finland then? IIRC they come from there.

Yes they are Finnish but they are not a big name here, despite the fact that heavy is very popular in Finland. I kinda like their music, but not enough that I would buy their albums. You might like to check out their website www.apocalyptica.com

I don't think it's classical music. Just because they use cellos does not necessarily mean it is classical music. The music itself determines what it is. Just the way pop music played on a piano does not make it classical music. Of course, I'll have to hear some of their songs to determine it, but from what you say, I doubt it is. However it sounds interesting.

Just to back up my verdict on these metal musicians, compare "In Memoriam" to Mozart's String Quintet in No. 3 in G Minor, K 516, Allegro. Download it off of Kazaa. Notice how Mozart's music actually has intricate and complicated themes in it that "In Memoriam" does not have. "In Memoriam" basically has the celloists smushing the reed down on all of the strings simutaneously, producing a harsh growling sound, similar of the one I produced when I tried playing my cousin's violin.
