Washing machine explodes after petrol used as detergent
October 14, 2003

A man who used petrol to clean colour-stained trousers in his washing machine saw the whole lot blow up, wrecking two walls of his Moscow apartment, police said.

He poured a litre of petrol into the rinse chamber in an attempt to fix the colour-run trousers. When he turned on the machine, the whirring action ignited the petrol and led to a huge explosion.

Other residents of the apartment building escaped with a fright.

The fire brigade said it would give the man a few lessons in how to deal with flammable liquids, Itar Tass news agency said.
That was pretty creative of him. Pity the stupid machine had to blow his idea away.

That is so cool. Sure, it's dangerous and stupid.

But it's also very cool.

Man, it says something that I have the incomprehensible urge to try that. It's the same urge I had when I saw on the can of Clarosil that the acne pads were flammable and should be kept away from an open flame (as it turned out, the pads weren't all that flammable, after all).

As they say, common sense isn't so common. Maybe he'll try using gasoline instead, next time.

I always knew that the 08/15 Russian always looks for a solution for his problems.
Only this time, it was really brain-dead....

Still doesn't beat the incident with the steam, the cook and the nuclear icebreaker.

How inconspicuous...you wake up in the morning and there's an innocent looking washing machine in your front lawn. You move in to inspect it, and then they plug in the extension chord....

Ouch.

As was stated Petrol is gas, if he had used diesel (or Kerosene for that matter) it would have caught on fire but would not have exploded. in fact there is an extremely narrow range of liquid vs vapor that you can get diesel based fuels to explode at (the vapor has to be 1-8% of the total volume of air)

"He poured a litre of petrol into the rinse chamber in an attempt to fix the colour-run trousers."

Why he thought gasoline would fix his pants, I don't know. It's probably a false alibi though. He really wanted to see something explode. Lucky bastard.

This, children, is why those washing machines say "Don't wash oil soaked textiles in this machine."
