German man is to appear in court charged with teaching his dog to give the Hitler salute.
The black sheepdog-mix, named Adolf, has been taught to lift his right front paw up straight in the salute on command.
Police were called to the scene in Berlin when Roland T, 54, shouted at passers-by last year.
When a patrol arrived, he allegedly showed them the trick he had taught his dog, gave the salute along with Adolf, and shouted: "Sieg Heil."

Why would somebody teach a dog the Nazi salute in the first place?

How does a dog do a Nazi salute? I don't think they can extend their front legs straight out.
....
I wonder if it's illegal to have a Hitler mustach, too.

It is my understanding that the German constitution outlaws the Nazi party. That brings me with two questions for the various Germans we have here on SD.net;
1. Does this prohibition really exist in the constitution, and to what extent of association does it cover?
2. In your personal opinion as a German, do you think that this prohibition of a particular political party is a good and/or necessary law?

How do they know it was a Nazi salute? It has a paw, not a hand.
Heck, it was a black sheepdog. He could've been symbolizing Black Power.

That's as bad as putting a dog to sleep for being trained to sit or fetch! It's fucked up in so many ways!

The article wrote:Adolf will probably be brought to a pet shelter, the Berliner Kurier reports.
Carola Ruff, of the local animal protection organisation, says the dog shouldn't be judged for what its owner taught it.
"It makes me sick to think someone's using his dog as an instrument of his deranged brain," she told the paper.

Dogs can'y even do the Hitler salute because they can't hold their front paws fully extended in front of their body for any length of time unless their feet are resting on something, but that's besides the point. How does teaching your dog to do a stupid tasteless trick warrant 3 years in the can?

Unless the dog was trained to attack Jews or something, there really isn't a reason to kill it.

Germany takes its anti-Nazi laws very, very seriously. I think it's a violation of free speech, although I can certainly understand why things are the way they are.

That was not the reason. He was arrested for disturbing the public order by shouting Sieg Heil to the people passing by, including the police, while his dog Adolf did the stupid trick. That means he's a Nazi lunatic. Nazis in Germany are arrested (and good riddance to them), but I agree that if he is as insane as he appears then he deserves an asilum, not the jail.

It won't be, read posts above.

I guess I'm pampered to live in a land where people are completely free to be tasteless assholes. I understand why'd they be sensitive, but I'm just saying that three years is majorly excessive.

The man deserves the nuthouse. Doubt he'll change his tune about nazism because of three years in the slammer.
As for the dog...good they didn't put it to sleep because of it's owners thoughts on politics and stupid trick he was taught.

I'm not questioning that he was being a jackass and deserved to be carted off, but I don't think that what he did warrants three years in the slammer.

Three years might be a bit too much, but some punishment is definitely deserved. If some asshole decided to burn a cross on his lawn across the street from a black family, he certainly would deserve punishment.

The article, again, wrote:Now he has been charged with using symbols of unconstitutional organisations. If found guilty, he faces up to three years in prison.
It appears that three years is the
maximum penalty for using symbols of unconstitutional organisations. He'll doubtless get less, if any, jail time.
