GENEVA - Researchers have more than doubled the world speed record for internet data transfer.

Scientists at the CERN particle physics laboratory in Switzerland sent the equivalent of a full-length DVD movie in about seven seconds.




Colleagues at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) received the data.

The land record was set on Oct. 1 by transferring 1.1 terabytes of data over a 7,000-kilometre link in less than 30 minutes, the team said.

The average transfer rate was 5.44 gigabits per second (Gbps), which broke the previous record of 2.38 Gbps – more than 20,000 times faster than a typical home broadband connection.

I believe this is part of Internet2, the all University-Government-Research-only internet meant to provide a means of transferring the huge quantities of data, collected at facilities like CERN, to places that would process and use that data, like Caltech and MIT.

I still say that bill gates is getting this for as his own christmas present and hooking it into the regular internet. What else do you do when your a multi billionaire tech geek?

Of course, the original Internet was never meant to become what it is today, so who knows what will happen with this hyperband stuff?

The problem with connecting this to Internet1 is that the systems on the public internet are not capable of such speeds. Server computers only put out at MOST 1Gb/s with new Gigabit technology, and on average little more then 10/100 speeds. The smaller computers would be lucky to get more then 10/100 speeds at all, given that their connection through their ISP to Internet2 would be limited to their current speeds.

Our computers and internet infrastructure are not capable of dealing with Internet2 datarates. I'm much more interested in getting fiberoptic to the home, as well as completely wireless anywhere anytime access to the internet. You give me a Global from E:FC and I'll be a happy man. Boy. Whatever.

The FCC is moving to put digital rights management into all hardware (computers, tvs, EVERYTHING) so the MPAA won't be shittin their pants unless the FCC doesn't get it's way. And since the FCC makes these laws, and since they're steadfastly moving for the DRM incorporation, it's very likely to happen.

I would have an up to 10 Mb connection via radio if hadn't been for those fucking "electricity allergic" people that are protesting against the antennas which gives them imaginairy headaches or something ! I just read the article, and it does indeed say that this is involved with Internet2:
