The outlook is bright however.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Academy Award winning actor Robert De Niro (news), 60, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer (news - web sites), but his prospects for a full recovery are good, his publicist announced on Monday.

"Doctors say the condition was detected at an early stage because of regular checkups," publicist Stan Rosenfield said in a statement. "Because of the early detection and his excellent physical condition, doctors project a full recovery."

De Niro won an Oscar as best actor in 1981 for "Raging Bull," and was named best supporting actor in 1975 for his role in "The Godfather: Part II."

The native New Yorker, who shot to prominence in Martin Scorsese (news)'s 1973 film "Mean Streets," has received four other Oscar nominations as best actor in "Cape Fear" (1991), "Awakenings" (1990), "The Deer Hunter" (1978) and "Taxi Driver" (1976).

He was last seen in movie theaters reprising his comic turn as mobster Paul Vitti in the film "Analyze That" with Billy Crystal (news)
I saw this in another forum, and it didn't have a link.

Ah shit. I think he's one of the best actors out there. Mainly because he has a cool style in his movies.

I hope he gets better soon.

Well good prospects are something to cheer about. The other thing is that eprhaps this might raise awarness for prostate cancer. A lot more men suffer from prostate cancer than women suffer from breast cancer. You bet whether the inside of the ass or the tits gets more funding.

I hope he get's better. He's always struck me as a really decent guy and it'd be a shame to see him die. The good prospects are well... good news.

(PS: Wilkens. Tits duh, after all they're so much more fun)

That's not fair. It's not that the location is sexy, but that women's health issues are siezed by feminist groups and awareness raised to women among all the other 'women's issues'.

I was making light of the reason why one recieves more focus. Obviously, yes, the awarness raised by various "women's issue" groups (not all of whom are neccessarily feminists) has been the leading source of its public knowledge. Well that coupled with a lot more celebrity speak on the issue, nto many public figures everyday people know about have talked about prostate cancer but you do hear of many involved with breast cancer. Its the unfortunate (or fortunate perhaps) side effect of celebrity in the US, famous people with causes raise awarness for those causes.

1) Feminist is not a dirty word. If your concerned with "women's issues", you're almost certainly a feminist.

2) I think the public figures who focus on it do so because of it's status as a "women's issue". There sin't that much campaign for stomach cancer, rectal cancer (which killed my grandmother), or many other cancers I can't think of right now.
The most famous cancers are associated with 'issues': lung cancer (smoking) leukaemia (children); brain cancer (well, brains are important) etc etc

Good to see that they caught it early, at least. There was actually an ad campaign in my area advising people to get tests for colon cancer. "Don't die of embarrasment," indeed.
