Members of Indonesia's elite Armed Forces (Kopasus), along with their special-trained dogs, descent from a helicopter during anti-terrorism drills in Jakarta on October 20, 2003. The training was jointly held with the Indonesian police ahead of next year's presidential election.

Seriously, they stole the idea from the HAB

I told you already: Guide dogs. But they didn't want wussy looking labradors or golden retreivers so they got "hard looking" German Sheperds.

Well they do guide the commandos to sources of trouble, and attack the sources.

All they need to do is issue these canines with Interceptor Body Armor, they'll be right.

My thoughts as well. Many police departments issue their K-9 officers bullet proof body armor, so why can't that military?

Indonesia?

A country actually lets blind people serve in their military???

HA!!!

But seriously, are they really blind or are the dogs just there to sniff out people?

please think about it. Do you really think they are going to give blind people automatic weapons and then set them loose?

Oh come on, dog's aren't 'disabled', they're just sapiently-challenged. They still have the same rights to serve their country as Homo Sapiens do. :P

He can't, he's our resident Space Cadet; it's his job to be born yesterday.

Well, you know with today's people and how utterly stupid or PC they can get, you can never really be sure all the time.

Would you rather the dogs be killed?

No, no, not at all, don't get me wrong, I've just never heard of/seen such a thing...much of a dog's virtue is in speed....body armor sufficient to cover el Perro would be waighty (Given their size) Hell, I used to wear a vest everyday, and while not overly heavy, very constrictive....I dunno...just seems...impractical..

It's more impractical to lose a dog whose training costs a lot of resources and time. You can't just grab any dog from the street and train him in fifteen minutes to properly handle an armed opponent. :P

The German shephards serving with Finnish peacekeepers in Kosovo have kevlar shoes to protect their paws as well.

Hmm, lots of funny comments in this thread.

while this is true, I would like to think that in some cases common sense does still prevail.

The vests are designed especially for dogs they are not just our vests strapped to the animal.
K-9 vests

they even answer your concern about slowing the dog down in their FAQ
K-9 Storm Vest FAQ wrote:6. Will my dog still be able to run fast and track criminals through all terrain?
Yes. The K9 Storm Vest was designed by a canine officer to enable police dogs to meet the demands of progressive tactical emergency response team operations and all regular calls for duty. The patented design was the result of extensive field research. The sizing system, unique to K9 Storm Inc., ensures an accurate fit that allows working dogs to work to their full potential. Your dog protected in a K9 Storm Vest will be able to do everything he could do without the vest, and he will even be able to do some things that would be impossible without it.
