so I cooked up a T.V. dinner. The kind with mashed potatoes. Well, I decided to try the potatoes. it was hot. Lik it was core of the sun hot. anyway. It was so hot I tried to hork it out. but when I inhaled in a refloxry gasp, the slop got caught in my throat, forcing me to swallow. No pepsi nearby. Anywqay, I could feel it burning my esophagus all the way down, and now my throat/chest burns like it's on fire. I mean it so bad I want to cry. and I can't do anything but drink water to ease the pain. I think, my friends, that I may have seriously injured myself....God, my throat.....should I go to the emergency room, y'all think, or have you had similar experiences and lived to tell about them......oh the pain...

Hmmm.....ice water seems like a good idea.
At least a call to a medical person could be good.

That seems to happen whever I'm eating instant mashed potatoes, but never that bad. I'd say cold water, and waiting to see if it goes away. Perhaps a call to the doctor if you think it's serious. Basically, what Shinova said.

Instant mashed potatoes, a new way to cook humans... From the inside out: gooey and chewy on the inside, crispy and crunchy on the outside!
Seriously though, ice water, if it doesn't improve, or you start having breathing problems or whatever, go to the doctor/ER, there are some things you don't mess with.

Actually, I'd just go with cool (not cold) water. If my first aid courses were worth anything, extreme cold could make it worse. If it doesn't seem to help, and you really think it's worse than a "pizza burn" then you should probably get it looked at. Something swelling up at 3 AM would be a bad thing.

I always find it amusing and slightly frightning when people with painful but harmless to actually dangerous and serious injuries get online and post about it for advice before calling medical help.

Call one of those free 24-hour medical hotlines for advice. We have one here in Ontario as part of our health-care program. Do you have something similar in your area?

Well, it does hurt to talk today, fortunately, I'm in a class all day where I get to learn how to be nicer to dumbasses. Hopefully by tomorrow, everything should be better. as of now, the only problem I have is difficulty swallowing anything solid. So I guess it's just going to suck to be me for the next few days...Slept well, though, for that I am thankful
![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
and no, We don't have an ask-a-nurse in my area, that I'm aware of. OH well, I guess "God" is punishing me for gluttony... ::snicker:: Oh, but I can't tell you how badly this sucks, guys. Oh, and who IS the king of SDN food-related injuries?

If the pain doesn't clear up soon, then at minimum I'd stay off solid foods for a few days, and perhaps take some anti-acids so that stomach acid doesn't further damage your esophagus.
A doctor might be able to recommend something. Maybe pepto-bismal would help *shrug*.
For seriously burns, your esophagus can become constricted (you'll have trouble swallowing) and they have to pass a "bougie" (a cylindrical, mercury-filled dilator) through your esophagus to correct the problem.

Just follow the instuctions to let it stand for a few minutes. I've figured out *why* a few times myself
