I hate these fucking things. It makes eating a damn chore- and it looks horrible- worst thing is that noone can seem to decide what exactly causes it? Anyone know? One website (don't have any med journals on me) said it was certain types of toothpaste or some such, another said unknown, another said stress, another said viral ...

I always thought it was viral but I may be confusing it with impentago.

In my own experience, it is directly correlated to stress and lack of sleep. Mind you, it's well known that your entire immune system weakens when you're under stress or suffering from lack of sleep, so this shouldn't come as a surprise even if the clinical cause is a virus. After all, your body is bombarded by viruses and bacteria all the time, but it's those lapses in your immune system which let the little bastards secure a beach head.

I only get them if I accidentaly bite the inside of my lips/cheeks, but stress or the lack of sleep probably adds to the likelyhood of one forming on a cut.

My sister and I get canker sores in our mouths all the time, and we're both the type that are often stressed out while lacking sleep.

Yeah, if I had to look at that face in the morning I'd stress out too Spanker.

I didn't say that, did I???

Seriously though, I heard it was heraditary (sp?). My dad I know gets em, and I get them from time to time. I haven't had one in a while. However, Wong has freaked me the fuck out too. Cuz I'm low on sleep, and I'm heading for a root canal in the morning. AHHHH!!!

Herpes Simplex type 1.
ORAL HSV-1: HSV-1 causes the vast majority of oral herpes ("cold sores" or "fever blisters"). About 60% of the US population over the age of 12 is infected with HSV-1 virus. However, only about one third of people who are infected recall ever having any symptoms.

For me it happens when I get sick or when I'm stressed for time and not brushing my teeth as thoroughly as I should.

Actually it's because you touch yourself at night

I always figured my occasional ones where related to periods in which I consumed about a pound of sugar in candy per day for several days.
