The CCW Thread

I'm wondering how many people on this board have a CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) permit?
There seems to be a fair number of firearms enthusiasts here, so I'll bet at least a few of us have one.

If you do, what state is it in and what are the requirements of your state to obtain one?

As for myself.

Yes I do have one.
I'm in Indiana and we call our CCW the LTCH (License to Carry Handgun).

It's good for 4 years and cost $25.
Indiana's a 'shall issue' state. This means that if you meet the requirements set out in the law, the police are required to issue the permit.

Indiana's requirements are simply that you be a 'proper person'* and have a 'proper reason'**. We also honor all permits issued by other states and even foreign countries.

*IC 35-47-1-7
"Proper person"
Sec. 7. "Proper person" means a person who does not:
(1) have a conviction for resisting law enforcement under IC 35-44-3-3 within five (5) years before the person applies for a license or permit under this chapter;
(2) have a conviction for a crime for which he could have been sentenced for more than one (1) year;
(3) have a record of being an alcohol or drug abuser as defined in this chapter;
(4) have documented evidence which would give rise to a reasonable belief that he has a propensity for violent or emotionally unstable conduct;
(5) make a false statement of material fact on his application;
(6) have a conviction for any crime involving an inability to safely handle a handgun;
(7) have a conviction for violation of the provisions of this article within five (5) years of his application; or
(8) have an adjudication as a delinquent child for an act that would be a felony if committed by an adult, if the person applying for a license or permit under this chapter is less than twenty-three (23) years of age.

**IC 35-47-1-8
"Proper reason"
Sec. 8. "Proper reason" means for the defense of oneself or the state of Indiana

In a perfect world, I'd have a CCW permit.

But I don't live in a perfect world. I don't have the money for any weapons, nor do I have a place to keep them (I live in a dorm), a place to fire them (I live in the middle of Phoenix), or time to play with them.

I put myself down under "not interested", because a CCW would mean nothing without weapons. I could make sacrifices to get things to work, but they would be far too great. Maybe someday I'll get one. But not today.

In a perfect world people would not steal murder or rape, and thus there would be no need for guns.

I don't have one but I could get one if I wanted.

Class and Requirements
Receive your Certification upon completing a 16 hour Class. This is required for your Arizona CCW Permit which is issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. These Concealed Carry Weapon Permit (CCW) Classes are held at: Ben Avery Shooting Facility located at I-17 & Carefree Highway, Phoenix, Arizona.

You are NOT REQUIRED to be an Arizona Resident in order to obtain this Permit. Call 602.279.3770 or Toll-Free 866.279.3770 or E-Mail Me: rick@azccw.com for further information.

The only requirements are that you be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident alien with no felony convictions, no domestic dispute convictions and are free of any mental disorders.
It's been awhile but even before Arizona had a CC permit law you could carry a weapon in plain site instead without having a license. I've seen people (ranchers) who weren't associated with law enforcement wear a pistol in a cowboy style belt while going into the super market. Things have changed a bit since then. It's still likely to be legal but people have become much more hysterical about guns. Plus, there's been an increase of "weapons free" zones. :roll: Generally that's within a certain distance of schools, businesses which post signs saying such, some parks, my work place, or generally whereever all the anti-gun spazes have made a good push.

What's interesting is that the biggest gun store in town is within the "weapons free" zone of a grade school. I'm guessing that it was grandfathered because the store was likely there before the school and certainly has been there longer than the law.

Yeah, but a pitbull or doberman might decide to bite your leg off, in which case a firearm can come in quite handy. There's always a need for guns IMO.

As for me, we don't have CCW up here, we can own firearms but we can't carry them. Which doesn't matter at this point since I can't own a firearm yet because I haven't done the training, filled out my forms, and forked over my fees.

So you can own it but not carry it? Carry as in only counts if it's "on your person" as opposed to being in a vehicle going someplace, or does it include both?

At any rate, what's the point then, besides defending your household (ie, for hunting, personal defense on the streets, etc)?

I don't have a gun yet. I'm hoping that'll change. What with all the pawn shops, shooting ranges, and relatively progressive gun laws, it shouldn't be too much trouble.

Your forget the "No because I'm not yet able to obtain one" option. I intend of get one when I'm 21. Pennsylvania has a shall issue law and I don't anticipate getting anything on my record so it should be easy.

But I don't live in a perfect world. I don't have the money for any weapons, nor do I have a place to keep them (I live in a dorm), a place to fire them (I live in the middle of Phoenix), or time to play with them.
On many campuses the security office will store guns for students.

Okay, thats one of three. Of course, DPS (main police office) is about a half mile away. It'd just be a real hassle which I don't need right now.

As I said, maybe someday.

You're missing the poll option: No, because I'm not old enough to have one.

We can't carry them on us unless we're out in the woods hunting or at a shooting range. Otherwise the guns have to be kept in locked boxes if we're say walking into a gunshop to get them fixed. There's some laws on proper transportation in a vehicle but I'm familiar with them, and I know I can't have the gun "locked & loaded" beside me in the passenger seat.

no, seeing that al i have is a rifle, it would be pretty damn hard to conceal, and damn near imposible to pull out from my pant leg in time to use. then there is the whole issue of not blowing my dick off.

No CCW, but I'm not 21, either. You can bet your bottom dollar that the day I turn 21 I'll be getting one though. Until then, I'll just have to walk around with an AR-15 slung over my shoulder. :D
