Ahem*
I watched masterpiece theater last night and Kiera Nightley was in an adaptation of Dr. Zhivago. Anyone else see this? Her acting ability is suspect in this miniseries. pure garbage. I bring this up because it confirms that Natalie Portman did indeed deserve the role of amidala in EP. I, II, and III. Agree? Disagree? Discuss.

Natalie Portman is dull as hell in Episode II. That doesn't prove she can't act. No actor can give a great performance in every production he or she is in. She hasn't been bad in anything else she's done, that I know of.
I still can't believe that this girl is nearly a full two years younger than I am.

Granted, I've seen NP in several films...can't recall the title...when she gives birth in a Wal Mart) proving that she indeed does posess mucha acting ability. I thought NP actually did well in AoTC, but it's just an opinion. The KN thing was a small basis for comparison based simply on observed ability. (Perhaps she just wasn't suited for Dr. Zhivago) Ahh well.

Natalie Portman can act, but its hard to do so if the lines you're given suck ass.

Its hard to give a decent performance when you have George Lucas as both writter and director...
Yeah, Natalie Portman can act. Its hard to make judgements based on George Lucas films...but I'm sure most would agree she was great in Leon/The Profession, Beautiful Girls, Where the Heart Is and all of her other films. Its not like she the greatest actress of all time but she is certainly a good one. So is Kierra Knightly...i guess everyone has their bad films. She was good in Bend It Like Beckham.

I dont watch PBS as much as I used to. Overall my TV viewing time has gone down. The internet has much to do with that.
I always told myself Ive join PBS when I had a "real" job. Has anyone here ever joined?

Yeah, I give to the local NPR station here in Jacksonville, 120.00 a year. I listen to it enough after all....I haven't donated to the larger entity, per se, however.

I saw pt. 1 of Dr. Zhivago. The problem is that it was a pretty flat and unimaginative adaptation. The producers somehow managed to take a Russian novel and drain it of every epic quality it had, which has to be a new "accomplishment". It didn't help that it was terribly miscast and that comparisons to the David Lean film were inevitable. Nobody really looked good in this thing.
And Sam Neill is definitely no replacement for Rod Steiger.

While I don't think Natalie Portman is much of an actress, Episode II is hardly an indication. Hayden Christiansen is quite an accomplished actor (see his in Life as a House) although you wouldn't know it by watching Episode II.
