So what are you doing for Guy Fawkes night?

I know I should be going for a good ol' gathering at the uni bonfire with the fair there and booze and enough pyrotechnics to, well, blow most of Parliament up. :P

Then a bar crawl, maybe.

err... they're having a party around here... I don't really plan on going, but it's a big bonfire, with some history lesson mixed in.

I've been hearing about the gov't banning fireworks unless used in official events.

Mind you, loads of them have been going off here for the past week, Friday was the worst, it was like they were firing rockets at trick or treaters.

I'll be storing up all my pent up urges for one hell of a New Year's fireworks display, if I can't celebrate Guy Fawkes night over here, then I'll be breaking out the Roman Candles of Mass Destruction for New Years Eve.

If I can't have a fireworks night, then I'm taking Cramlington with me...

So, if you could clarify... you British celebrate the anniversary of a man nearly blowing Parliament up?

That's beautiful. :)

Put it this way. We celebrate that the gov't found him... and beat the shit out of him then executed him.

If he'd actually got away with it and blown all of Parliament up along with a fair chunk of London, we'd still be celebrating.

Well, really, we celebrate the fact that we caught him, as we burn him on the bonfire as a rule on November the 5th. But really, it's just an excuse to blow things up. To hell with 25m restriction, we fire those buggers and go as far as 4m. :)

So Guy Fawks, in a way, sort of like the UK version of the Fourth of July, but celebrated for different reasons, eh?

Well, drastically different variation due to seasons, I think. Guy Fawkes tends to involve a really big bonfire, lots of people standing round it trying to keep warm, a dummy burning, lots of hot hearty type food and drink, such as hot chestnuts, mulled wine, parkin etc (although I tend to do Chilli because it's easier to do... :)), and fireworks. If I have my way, enough fireworks to give Hans Blix reason to raise an eyebrow or two.

Comparing it to July 4th isnt quite right, as they're both effected by the seasons. But yes, they both have fireworks and explosives. Although Guy Fawkes isnt really a big patriotic thing over here, it's just one of those days... :D

EDIT: and to clarify, Parkin is in no way comparable to Chilli, one being a ginger bread style yorkshire based cake, and the other being a hot and spicy mince type dish... :P

ROFL, I love that example, what a great way of explaining Guy Fawkes day...

I disagree with that cartoon. Halloween is way better than Guy Fawke's day; I guess that must not be obvious to a poor, backwards, limey wretch who has never known the bliss of hauling home two pillow-cases full of free candy.
And the ass-kicker? We get a blowing stuff up day too, it's just earlier in the year. And as for eating hearty wintry food, as Lumberjack is so interested in, that's what Thanksgiving's for.

Guy Fawke's day is great and all...but American holidays triumph once again. Except for Flag Day.

Well, for a start, if you tried to get 2 pillows full of free candy in the UK, you'd probably be chased up a stake and set fire to. And sure, you eat the big winter meal thing, but do you do it outside, in the freezing cold, with 30 odd people huddling together watching a madman lighting fireworks that are next to each other whilst one goes off, and struggling to get the fireworks to light themselves, having to use flaming newspaper as tapers and throwing gas lighters around the garden. Then there's the morning after attempts to find all the fireworks which came back down or next doors atomic weapons from a sinister man in the garden center.

Ok, so Halloween may sound like more fun, but Guy Fawkes night has more balls... :P :D
