Is Geography not Taught?

Five calls today, where I'm playing Receptionist for the office, where the person calling did not know that West-by-God-Virginia was a seperate state from Virginia.

I sometimes wonder... does North and South Dakota, or North and South Carolina have this problem? Is it just West Virginia that keeps getting stupid idjit Virginians that don't know (Charlottesville, Covington, Richmond, Tazwell, etc) are not West Virginian cities?

Hell... Virginia is supposed to be the 'Birthplace of Presidents" and home of the intellectuals of our nation. So why do they have such dumb idjit ignoramouses who don't even know what their home state is NAMED?

West Virginians might be redneck hillbillies... but at *least* we know what state we're from.

Some people don't think that Iowa exists, or they don't know that it's directly under Minnesota...

"Iowa, huh? That's over by Indiana or Ohio, right?"

you mean to tell me that people from the neighboring state don't know one of the surrounding states? Oh, and i get that quite a bit, being from Rhode Island. "Long Island?" "No goddammit Rhode Island!" "thats off the coast of New York right?" "Arrggggghhhhh!!!" Usually from people who live on the other side of the country.

When we moved to LA when I was 14, a few of the kids at school reacted with surprise to learn that yes, we indeed spoke English in Ohio. :x

Probably because you're the only West.... State and have no east state. If there was an East Virginia people probably wouldn't have that problem.

It's not just those states. Everyone in the US has a problem with geography. 87% of 18-24 year olds surveyed by the National Geographic could not find Iraq on a world map.

I don't have this problem. Everybody knows where New Jersey is, probably thanks to the smell.

Only because you Marylanders want a piece of Almost Heaven for yourself.

Joke:
A man dies and goes to Heaven, where he is told that he has the freedom to roam anywhere he wishes within. In his travels, he comes across a large group of people, trapped within a golden cage. Curious, the man goes and asks St Peter why these people are kept within the cage.
"Oh, those are the West Virginians." St. Peter answers. "If we don't keep them caged, they keep going home."

Strange and Fascinating Fact: The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia is experiencing a population growth. The closeness to DC, the beautiful scenery, and the slower pace of living is drawing the urbanites.

That's why I always say "Iowa. It's in the middle of the US. Yeah, right above Missouri. No, that's not Nebraska."

I've been through West Virginia. The scenery is some of the best you'll find on the East Coast. The poverty was just apalling, though. The difference once you crossed the state line from Virginia was amazing: huge modern house, huge modern house, huge modern house, state line, trailer, trailer, dilapidated farmhouse, trailer.

HEY! At least we can honestly say that we *OWN* those trailers, not rent out dinky little apartments in overcrowded cities.

West Virginia has the highest per-capita home ownership (or used to), and while most of them were trailers set on a 1/2 acre of land (or less), then at least by-golly they're *OUR* trailers and tiny plots of land.

Come back and do it again.. we need the money.

Seriously, tho... if you went rafting on the Lower New River, you were 3 miles away from my home, as the crow flies.

As the road crawls, it's about 13miles. ;)

Shit man, a lot of people (especially from Connecticut) confuse us with freakin' Idaho.

"Oh, you're from the potato state, then?"
"No, you freakin' Connecticut dipwad." :P

Should have the Australian method. We're roughly the same size of the US, and have 8 states.

Hell, people always get Iowa mixed up with Indiana, Ohio and Idaho. It's pretty annoying. :?
