Some people actualy think it makes sense to compare Star Wars with Matrix !

The IMDB boards are insanely insane. I try not to care about what crazys there say. For any given movie, you'll have four people saying that it was offensive to God, two people saying that the movie's actors are hot, one person offering undecipherable philosophical 'insight,' three people asking inane questions which make you wonder whether or not they saw the movie, and five people per previously mentioned person making snide comments about the aforementioned posts.

I wasn't going to read through that entire thing, so I'll just add some thoughts.

Matrix 1 was very much like Star Wars. It followed a similiar style of storytelling, it even had a triumphant conclusion much like ANH. Both films have fast pacing, a lot thanks to the editing. Not only that, but both films introduced new film techniques - SW introduced sfx in a new and EXCITING way, while Matrix did weird and interesting things as well (a lot that has been copied and parodied).

Reload and Rev aren't similiar to ESB or ROTJ. They are similiar to the Prequels however. By that I mean the prevalence of CGI in the storytelling more than anything. There's nothing wrong with CGI, but when it becomes a 'poor' substitute for storytelling then what's the point of emotionally investing in the characters? Or the plot? Or setting?

I think the Matrix sequels and the PT are in leagues of their own. The first Matrix was a classic the way SW is a classic. It's sequels leave much to be desired however.

On a thematic point of view, it makes sense to compare any work of literature to another. But usually the comparison has to be justified. Comparing Matrix 1 to ANH in terms of pacing or character archetypes or story construction, for instance. Obviously they're both different stories, but they do hold similarities. To compare and contrast between them isn't a crime; it's just another way of appreciating the story.

I post on such boards under my alternate alias "Skaffen-Amtiskaw" and I've been recently sneaking around those threads and some of the fanboys are amazingly dense.

Still, half of IMDb.com's members seem to type all in capitals and say "I TOTALY 10O% AGREE WITH U!!1!" most of the time.

In case it hasn't been brought up now, "The Matrix" and "Star Wars" both decribe an archetypical "Hero's Journey".

I can't stand Matrix and it's sequels. I think it's only a temporary phenomen, which will be forgot in some time, especially with now the third part such junk.

So that comparison is stupid. Matrix will never make it to a longlive level like SW.

Holy shit, a story where a regular guy is brought into a secret resistance, fufilling a prophecy and saving the resistance? Noooo... That couldn't be, Holiwood wouldn't take that kind of chance!

The guy is correct. Star Wars is indeed a better film than the Matrix. However there are others who like to disagree if you read the whole thing.

Personally I think both the Matrix and Star Wars are great movies. I enjoyed them both. However Star Wars is the better movie. The first Matrix was good but the sequels while very entertaining did not live up to my expectations.

Oh for fuck's sake, Star Wars and the Matrix are only similar in the most ridiculously superficial way. Hint: Luke doesn't die at the end of ROTJ, nor is there any "Christ-like" bullshit in the stories of either Anakin or Luke.

The Matrix is more like Life of Brian, only not as funny.

Anakin eventualy turned evil and became Darth Vader. Such a thing never happened to Jesus.

That reminds me, if they're comparable, then I want them to make a Matrix Holiday Special.

If only Art Carney were still alive. but at least you could still have it hosted by Bea Arthur, have Keanu Reeves wear gobs of make-up, let Carrie-Ann Moss 'sing' a disco version of one of the films' music pieces with Jefferson Airplane, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a shitty cartoon to put in the middle to top that crap Peter Chung did for the Animatrix.

Think about it; it'd be a fun holiday special as the Nebuchadnezzar races back to Zion in hopes of making it back in time fir Christmas, and in between all the fighing, they can have musical numbers and all that. It'd be swell.
