A friend's dad rented it for the week (business expense), and a couple of friends and I got to ride it around. Sure, there's no real viable market for the thing, but after you spend five minutes getting used to it, riding it kicks total ass. Coolest $5,000 gadget ever, outside of automatic weaponry.

Segway the choice of a geek generation.

Did you try testing out the design flaw with the low batteries where it abruptly pitches you forward onto your face? Or do you have one of the newer models?

Yeah, that was brought up. It was one of the newer models, but that didn't stop one guy from crashing it into a telephone pole on his first try. No lasting damage, but he was pretty banged up.

I mentioned adding a third wheel, and then so did a guy who showed up ten minutes later. Of course, the third wheel restricts its supercool turning ability. Ba-zing!

I saw some dork riding one on 34th street coming home from work on Tuesday. Where do you leave them when you reach your destination? Do they climb up stairs?

Nope, they can't handle a decent curb let alone stairs. And even better, the lightweight version is about 65 pounds and the heavy-duty version nearly 100, that ought to make going up stairs real fun.

That's simple. What else are you going to blow $6,000 on?

Other than conspicuous consumption, they have no use. They are inferior in every way to a bicycle: bicycles are lighter, faster, cheaper, and healthier.

They do have one advantage over a bike: Segways make you look much more like the stupid.

How much does one of those old person scooters cost? Ever since I saw one on Seinfeld it seemed like a cool idea.

Meh, often times Maddox is funny but this time he just sounds like he's whining. He leaves out the fact that the guy whose article he linked to has a lot of experience building balancing devices and admits that his own version has a few problems that the original does not. Once you have a balancing robot, the next logical step is to turn it into a transportation platform; and he also admits that his version isn't as safe as the "real thing" - most notably, there's a lot of exposed wiring that can easily get caught and pull out, stopping the machine and putting your face on an intercept course with the ground.

In THEORY, they could revolutionize transportation in big cities by replacing cars for medium length trips. In fact, people who live in city centers might be able to get rid of their cars entirely and use their Segway for trips that are too far to walk (which makes their $5000 price tag suddenly seem reasonable). In practice, they're too big and fast for the sidewalks, too slow for the bike lanes, and outright hazardous in traffic lanes. You'd have to lay out a special lane or sidewalk section for them, and that's just not going to happen for a $5000 rich man's toy.

...it's a bicycle. I have a bicycle. It cost me $400. It's a pretty good bicycle, too.

Bah, it almost duplicates the price of the bike without any major improvements (that hardtail doesn't stand a chance against my Genius in a rough climb). I'll keep my scan2 frame thankyouverymuch
