Cross Of Iron - Artsy film masquerading as war flick

I saw this movie on recommendation by some of the people on this board who always mentioned it as a great war film. OK, I must disagree. This was an art house film masquerading as a war film. Right from the start when they have the German kids singing a childlike chorus. UGH.
Then the special effects were...passable. I watched one of the most cliched war stories unspool. Grizzled war veteran who knows better and eager officer looking for success get off on the wrong foot. Where have I seen this before? The Russian kid POW who dies by the his own troops...ohhh...I get it, the utter madness and futility of war. UGH.
Anyway it needed something called an editor. It dragged on and on and on. The battle scenes were hardly exciting, except for Steiner's retreat through the factory which I thought was well done.
The hospital scene was just weird. I flet like you needed to be high to truly appreciate it. And I didn't buy why Steiner would go back after getting some nice poon from the nurse. I GET why that happened, I just didn't buy it from a character POV.
And the end....PAIN. Such PAIN. Awful children's chorus reprise and Steiner laughing like a dime store Joker. Only two things saved that ending from truly descending into suckage.
"I will show you where the Iron Crosses grow." Best line in the whole fucking movie. And the closing quote regarding the bitch that bore Hitler being in heat again.
Otheriwse VERY disappointed in this movie. Sorry if this offends the fans of this art house flick but I just didn't like it.
