Publishers?

Well, I know I should have put this in the Writer's Workshop forum, but I'm not a member of it right now. I put in the application in the summer, but eh. Maybe later.
Anyway, here's the shortest version of the story. For my intro to Creative Writing, we had to write a short story. The assignment had a minimum of 5 pages; I wrote 18. My teacher, along with many of my classmates, said I should work more on the story, expanding it to a novel, which all good in my mind. But I thought: Maybe I should publish the short work?
Secondly, I'm thinking I should send something in because I want to go to grad school for Creative Writing (instead of Literature), and one school that I looked at accepts 10 fiction, 10 poetry applicants per year. So I thought.. get working now.![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
So my question is: does anyone know any sites or publishers which I can send my current short work to? Any help would be great.![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
