WTF: XM8 Light Assault Rifle. Who designed it, Cardassians?

It looks exactly like something the Bajorans (or Cardassians would design, plus it uses 5.56x45 (what a shock). I'd rather have one in .280 British...

I really hope they're not copying Trek phaser designs, especially ones designed by religious fundies...

EDIT: Fixed title

I think it looks more Cardassian than Bajoran. It's coloration and curves are reminiscent of the Galor class. The only Bajoran weapons I remember seeing were blocky and either red or black.

Since they`ll shoot bullets they look more like Starship Troopers guns.

They took the G36 and pissed on it.

Son of a gun this rifle is going to kick. Although I am surprised about the barrel length. At least there will be a long barreled version for longer range combat.

Anyway check out the video at the bottom of the link. The XM-8 is quite stable at full auto.

LMAO!

Considering HK made both the G36 and this... thing, I'd say they have every right to piss on it!

.280 requires totally redesigning the weapon, 6.8x43mm however will fit with a very minimal of changes and may well work its self into service over the next few years

Ah kewl. Got it. Of course, rebarreling an AR15 seems trivially easy (just detach the sighting system from the rifle, replace the old upper receiver with the new one, reattach the sighting system, and re-zero the sights) but I don't know about an HK G36 rifle. Isn't the G36 action descended from the AK47's?

HOLY FUCK!!

The last time I went to worldguns.ru, it had a normal gun concept drawing of it. But this is just too wierd.

They had better make it black, or I will be forced to make an impromptu visit to HK-USA HQ.

Check the link I posted. They have black models. It seems some of the experimental models are grey is all.

Exactly!!! I have good respect for Heckler und Koch for their excellent weapon designs, but why did they choose that ugly yellow-brown color!?

Hmm, *thinks about joining HAB*

Uh... Einhander, he was talking to me. A little too much of this is seems. Image

But the shape isn't so bad, once you look at it a bit. Sort of like the Halo 2 Battle Rifle (without the bullpup stock).

It looks much better in this picture:

Wow. reminds me of a scifi weapon. Now all we have to do is come up with a portable anti-personnel laser. :?

Funny it look more like if it was one of your kids toy guns. :D

That is what it reminded me of first.

They also have the air bursting grenade launcher that would be integrated in under the barrel. They can set the distance they want the grenade to go off then fire it at the target. Fun stuff.

Incorrect. Right now the system only calls for M203 while the XM29 and XM25 are further developed. Once either the 29 or 25 enter service the M203 (or the new versions) are to be removed from service. Traditional grenadadiers will be brought back into service.

Ohhh thanks for the correction.

I swear I thought that was MC's gun in Halo at first

An example of life imitating art, or just the natural evolution of things? Cause we all know gun makers are big sci fi fans :D

I think its a bad ass rifle, personally.

actually if you got it in the black with maybe some grey trim or even all black, and remove the magazine I think it would look like a Starfleet phaser rifle. In the OP the orangeish brown colored one looks like a Cardassian rifle, but that it mainly because of the color.

Now this is interesting... and kinda scary, I am not sure I would want to shoot ammo with a plastic casing to it.
XM-8 specs wrote:It will fire all standard 5.56mm NATO ammunition, and, to further decrease the load on the future infantrymen, a new type of 5.56mm ammunition is now being developed. This new ammunition will have composite cases, with brass bases and polymer walls, which will reduce weight of the complete ammunition, while maintaining compatibility with all 5.56mm NATO weapons.

Why not?

Who the fuck is Allant Tech Systems, BTW? I did a search of their
page, and all I saw was lots of aerospace stuff and 20~mm and above
calibre weapons for Bradleys. Not exactly the kind of people I want
working on an infantry rifle. They cocked up the OICW badly enough.

Give the contract to Bushmaster, Ruger, Colt, Browning, H&K, et al
instead of Allant TechSystems, and I'll have confidence in the M-8...

But it's too late now...I predict another cockup of possible M-16 scale.
