May be a long shot but......

Does anyone here know of a guy from Virginia named Greg Roberts?

A couple of weeks ago, I went into my yahoo email account and found out I have subscribed to an all-black chat\forum\email site at blackplanet.com. The emails from that site had the username and password. I decided why would anyone sign me up to that site. I tried to access it a few times only to find out that it was down due to maintenance. But today I managed to login. Apparently someone named Greg Roberts (who according to the profile is black, 23 years old and is from Virginia) joined that site with my email address. Now I don't know if "Greg" hacked into my email account or thought that using a random email so he could join the site. But I made sure that he would not be able to use his BP account. I've switched the email address in the profile and changed passwords.

Has this happened to anyone here before?

Nope.

He didn't have to hack your account. When you sign up for most forums, they ask you for your E-mail address and you can enter anything you want. If the forum sends an activation link you'd need access to the E-mail account in order to activate the account, but it would create it nonetheless.

Maybe it was a mistake, and his E-mail address at yahoo is very similar to yours? I can't imagine what someone would hope to accomplish by doing that. It's nothing more than an insignificant nuisance at most. If someone did it to me, I would just delete the activation E-mail and that would be the end of it.

did you try signing up for yourself? if it requires a link to activate the account, then chances are he's never used it beyond the signup phase. Not all sites that require you to sign up need an activation link after all. then again it's entirely possible he's gotten your email address from somewhere else and used it on there. Mailing lists, message boards, etc. Tons of possibilities.

Well I decided to drop it. If it happens again, then I guess further measures are needed.
