Placenames

Post by haas mark »

What are some strange and/or funny placenames you've come across?

For example, there is apparently a Hooker County, Nebraska, and a Mexico, Missouri.

The things you learn when you have to make links to nearly every newspaper in the country.. >_>

There is a wee village in Ireland called Muff. And before anyone asks they have a swim team with quite a few divers. :D

I've always found Best over in Reagan county amusing.

I don't think anyone lives there anymore. Kinda creepy, driving by that one dilapidated wooden shack when passing through the place. I should take a picture of it.

One placename that annoys the fuck out of me is an american town called "Auld Ayr" I happen to live in "Ayr" which dates back nearly a thousand years as a royal burgh, but these fucks call their town "auld ayr" and make my life hell trying to find fuck all on the web.

Of course, it can't be much better or worse than Elephant Butte. :P Or, considering the demographic, White City (next to Carlsbad Caverns).

Not really a place name but there's an Exit 69 - Big Beaver near where I live. Not suprisingly it's the most stolen road sign in America.

There's a housing development around here called Rancho Sin Vacas.

Kind of funny and kind of stupid at the same time.

Well, it's not so much a weird place name, but there's a tiny little village in Devon called Hannaford, which is weird because that's my last name and as far as I know, I'm the last in the line of the Hannafords....might be worth seeing if I have some sort of claim over the place. The idea of ruling a village makes me go crazy with the thought of power, well, atleast now I know how the Mods feel...

We've driven to Las Vegas a few times before. I forget whether it was Las Vegas or Mammoth Lake.

Either way, along the way there's an exit to a certain avenue. That avenue is called:

Zzyxz

Avenue Zzyxz. I kid you not.

Note: The exact spelling may be different, but that's basically it.

Okay, back home in fayetteville, There's highway 110, throughout lincoln county, there are many, many, unincorporated towns. as you move from north to south along 110, you come across three roadsigns in succession, of unincorporated towns that are:

Killen

Skinem

Edom

(Kill 'em, skin 'em and Eat 'em)

Only in Tennessee :)
