Mad World by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews has become the final number one single of 2003.
The Christmas chart-topper remains the UK's best-selling single, in a Top 40 with no new entries.
Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne's former number one hit Changes climbs back up to number two, swapping places with The Darkness who fall into third position.
Dido's Life For Rent remains atop a largely static album chart, with Will Young still in second place.
Bo Selecta's Proper Crimbo remained steady at number four in the single's chart, while Will Young's Leave Right Now jumped one place to number five.
There were no new entries in the top 20, as few records are released in the week after Christmas.
Gary Jules and Michael Andrews' song, a cover of a Tears For Fears classic, was the surprise Christmas number one last week.
The track, which was recorded in Andrews' basement for $50 (£29), had been used in the soundtrack for the cult film Donnie Darko.
The song emerged from being a 50-1 outside chance in late November to being joint favourite with The Darkness' Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) after Jules and Andrews' played the song on UK TV.
In the album charts two albums moved back in to the top 20 - Christina Aguilera's Stripped, from number 23 to 13, and Alicia Keys' The Diary of, which moved from number 26 to 20.
Source.
Now that is just bizzare.
Great song, of course, but bizzare.

What irritates me is that when Donnie Darko first came out, no one knew what the hell it was and so Gary Jules's rependition of Mad World didn't get famous, but then YEARS later when some Radio 1 DJ mentions the film and people see it, they hear the song and it gets to number 1!
Just shows how screwed up the media is I suppose...

Jules' cover is much better than the original, too.
Oh, and thanks to me reading the comments on the article on Fark, I know that there is a Donnie Darko Director's Cut in the works, for DVD release, and possibly even a theatrical run.

The fecking Darkness should have been #1. Don't get me wrong i like Mad World, but christ on a space hopper it's damn depressing. I had visions of whole families sitting arround the dinner table listening to that song and trying to bite their wrists open. The Darkness make people smile Gary Jules causes suicide, thats all i'm saying.

Question:
Who the fuck listens to the Christmas #1 over Christmas dinner regardless of what it is?
Who the fuck listens to any number one if they don't actually want to?
Who the fuck
cares what #1 is at any point except those directly affected by it (the music industry)?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the fun of guessing who it's going to be, but Gary Jules was #1 because mroe poeple bought that single in the week before Christmas than the Darkness, no other reason, and it's not going to cause holiday suicides. Tinsel stress causes that all on its own.
Personally, I've never bought a single in my life, and never intend to, excpet possible over the internet.

My family have a currious tradition of watching Top of the Pops as we eat crimbo dinner.

It's called "Proper Chrimbo" mainly because it's by Bo Selecta, who says "Proper Bo" all the time.
So there.
