Big January Bowl Games

As the "Capital One" Bowl Week closes in on the big games, it's time to place our bets for who will win the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl in 2004.
SUGAR BOWL:
Oklahoma vs. LSU
Gnome's prediction? LSU wins this one. OK just had a freakin' huge breakdown at the end of their season. LSU stayed strong through the whole thing. LSU comes in with a big boost cause they moved from #3 to #2, while OK is just glad they didn't get dropped to #3 after their embarassing loss to Kansas State.
ROSE BOWL:
USC vs. Michigan
Gnome's prediction? The situation already dictates that I root for Michigan. But beyond that, they stand a good chance. Although they have one more loss on the season than USC (curse you Oregon!) they were kickass for their last bunch of games. And how? Two words: Chris Perry. He's just a weapon not to be trifled with. He practically wins games all by his lonesome (also a Heismen Award nominee). And to be honest, I don't know crap about USC so whatever I hope they suck tomorrow.
I'e probably missed a bowl game that's happening on the 1st; there's way too many to keep track of, so be sure to include it if I don't have it here. Now then, place your bets!
EDIT: Whoops, Sugar Bowl is on the 4th.

I still think that OK is the best team in college football.

But they lost by 28 points to Kansas State. Best teams don't usually take an ass whippin' like that from anybody, especially late in the year. Not without some major excuse like food poisioning for the whole team or something.

This BCS crap has really screwed up all the bowls too. It used to be that the best ones were on January 1st and then things were done. Then they started putting the National Championship game on the 2nd and then it was whenever it would be good for tv after the 1st. Now it's just ridiculous the amount of games that come on the 1st and later now.
Wednesday, December 31
GAYLORD HOTELS MUSIC CITY BOWL
Wisconsin at Auburn, 12:00 PM ET
WELLS FARGO SUN BOWL
Oregon at Minnesota, 2:00 PM ET
AXA LIBERTY BOWL
Utah at Southern Miss, 3:30 PM ET
MAINSTAY INDEPENDENCE BOWL
Missouri at Arkansas, 7:30 PM ET
DIAMOND WALNUT SF BOWL
Boston College at Colorado State, 10:30 PM ET
Thursday, January 1
OUTBACK BOWL
Iowa at Florida, 11:00 AM ET
TOYOTA GATOR BOWL
Maryland at West Virginia, 12:30 PM ET
CAPITAL ONE BOWL
Georgia at Purdue, 1:00 PM ET
ROSE BOWL PRESENTED BY CITI
Michigan at USC, 5:00 PM ET
FEDEX ORANGE BOWL (aka the bowl that no one gives a crap about)
Miami at Florida State, 8:30 PM ET
Friday, January 2
SBC COTTON BOWL CLASSIC
Oklahoma State at Mississippi, 2:00 PM ET
CHICK-FIL-A PEACH BOWL
Tennessee at Clemson, 4:30 PM ET
TOSTITOS FIESTA BOWL
Kansas State at Ohio State, 8:00 PM ET
Saturday, January 3
HUMANITARIAN BOWL
Georgia Tech at Tulsa, 12:00 PM ET
Sunday, January 4
NOKIA SUGAR BOWL
Oklahoma at LSU, 8:00 PM ET
Now, I don't want USC to win but if they have a strong win against Michigan it'll be interesting to see if the ratings for the Sugar Bowl suck ass or not. It should still be a good game but I can't see people caring as much if USC already won the Rose Bowl.

LSU will beat all over OK, who had a piss-poor showing against KSU. Good, truly good teams just don't do that. Sure, you can lose, but that was a fucking blowout.
I predict USC over UM, because USC is simply a very strong team all around, holding OSU's Jackson to like 30 yards or something, stuff like that. I am less certain about this game though.

Halftime at the Rose Bowl and we're getting our shit ruined by USC. Get this, USC has 5 sacks, three fumbles, and one blocked FG-attempt against us right now and two touchdowns to boot. Navarre is playing like a wuss and is too scared to leave the pocket so he's getting sacked like crazy because our offense can't stop their D. We've got about two drives where we've picked up a 1st down and it's only sheer luck that the score isn't 24-0.
Right now 14-0. Lloyd Carr better be whipping his team into shape in the locker room, otherwise this is gonna be a blowout.

You're lucky that wasn't a lot more lopsided.

For real. We dodged a couple of bullets there; by all rights the score should've been 38-14. Although USC lucked out on that on INT they got off of the ball bouncing off Edwards's foot; though it was an ill-advised pass.
Regardless, we were outplayed big time. All that hype about how this was gonna be "the biggest Rose Bowl in BCS history" and crap (which I didn't buy into anyways, mind you) turned out to be nothing. It was a lame boring snooze-fest and Michigan sucked the big one. What a damn dissapointing end to a good season.

UM didn't suck, I think USC really is just that damned good.

I predict LSU will beat OK and be the official national champion, but the sports media will be too busy stroking its USC hard-on to give LSU the credit it deserves.

I predict that LSU will spank OU like a cheap whore.
Geaux Tigers!

So far OSU is making any victory over Oklahoma seem less impressive than USC's win over Michigan.
OSU leads KSU 21-7 at the half.

Geaux Tigers Hersey if I didn't pull for the home team. Besides it's to my benefit if LSU wins, women well inadvertly flash you after such great victory. I predict Nick Saban's war dogs with tear up the tear up the OK quaterback.

For beating a team as overrated as OK? I'm not saying that LSU is bad, they may well be the best team in the nation. However, I don't see that beating OK will demonstrate that.

You're right, although the fact that the BCS fucked up and wouldn't let LSU play USC is hardly their fault. LSU's much more difficult schedule strength is evidence of that.

It's time to eliminate the BCS in favor of a playoff system. Division IAA, II, and III have had playoffs for years, and the lack of bowl games doesn't seem to have destroyed them. We could even integrate the bowl games as part of the playoffs, or they could be a post-season invitational series with no impact on the National Championship (which they kind of are already)...

At the same time, you can't blame USC for having their supposedly tough opponents end up sucking (Auburn, anyone?).

Notre Dame
![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
It's always nice to see ND get spanked. Although it's not so nice that NBC should have renewed it's contrace with ND totally wasting a channel with only ND games.

In related news, Oklahoma officially changed their school nickname from The Sooners to simply Beotch.

Quite frankly, I find the concept of National Co-Champions absurd. Fucking BCS nonsense. How hard would it really be to have a national tie-breaker? Call it the uberbowl or the tidy bowl or whatever, just end the stupidity!

Notre Dame could go 0-11 next year and they'd still get their contract renewed. It's ridiculous.

Not at all. It means we can all watch Notre Dame get spanked every week of the season!
I look foreward to it.

I tend to like Notre Dame getting spanked as well but sometimes I'd rather see some other games from the Midwest or the East than a ND game.
Still, it is fun watching them get punked.
