Rave = Teh Stupid?
Ok, #1 thing, Happy New Year.
I just came from some place (we still call them discotheques, you probably think they're called "dance clubs" and discos are only 70's music, but whatever) and apparently there was some "popular" british DJ guy, and the whole think was like a Rave. Kinda.
Well, I've never been to one of these things before, but I thought they were supposed to be somewhat upbeat, so you'd sweat and have to swallow Ecstasy and drink craploads of Red Bull (which most people were doing anyway) but the music was HELL BORING SLOW! It was techno-like, the guys behind the DJ-console once in a while would touch the dials and scratch the records, and people were swaying around like fucking zombies, but instead of doing it like some kind of furious tribal dance epilepsy, they were swaying BORINGLY like they were all stoned (whether they were or not)
And who the hell is this guy Shem McCauley, aka "Slacker"? Is he supposed to be famous, or important? Does it take a lot of skill to hit the "randomize song" in the "dj beat" composing software?
If somebody didn't buy the ticket for me (over 20 dollars, US... that's like 19 dollars more than I'd spend for the rights to go to a club) I wouldn't have even considered getting there, but to tell the truth it was pretty pathetic.
Thoughts? Opinions? Do you think I wasn't at a rave at all, that raves are cool? Do you think they suck? Post here. If it's informative, even better.

It sounds weird. Raves tend to have mixes of types of music. Not just one big room with really slow music. That would be in some chill room perhaps, but not the central area.
And if it's a real DJ, then it does take a bit of skill. It isn't some computer that randomizes songs. Moving from one song to the next usually requires matching beats and stuff like that so it flows together.

I detest rave. Rave was big here in the early 90's and IMHO it sucked. It introduced to to my cruelest rejections by women, it introduced me to extacy and the dangers the overdose and dehydration. On top of it the music sucked. It has no emotion and no feeling, but the people at a rave hardly see that because if you take enough E you can dance to a car alarm.

Damn.. that's horrible for a discoteque... Night club.. whichever.
Also, DJing does take a bit of work.. you have to listen to the balance and make sure it's right through a good part of the song, and the DJs where I come from still have to take requests at the same time, so it's not necessarily an easy job. But I'd think a discoteque would play more techno music.. -shrugs- I dunno. Just what I'm used to.
As for it being like a rave, from what I've heard, and comparing it to the club I used to frequent in ABQ, they aren't normally that much alike, but can be (and I used to go on goth night, which would be MOST like a rave).

I went to a few raves back when I was underage...
This was when they started appearing here in Tassie in about 97 onwards in any real quantity. I gave up on the scene pretty quickly, fiunding most of the people there to be wannabes who were more interested in telling their friends how cool they were, than enjoying themselves while they were there.
And in my opinion it hasn't gotten any better...

I didn't know there was still a rave culture alive. I pretty much associate the whole rave and e-tard era to 1999-2000.
The last time I went to a rave-like party was halloween 2001 at a warehouse apartment in NYC and the music sucked. They were playing jungle or house (the specific types are too fuzzy sometimes) which was mainly various drum beats with no melody and it was giving me a headache.
I like clubs that play techno music however because its a little hard for me to dance properly to hip-hop and R&B, as I'm still getting the hang of dancing to the beat and all that, while dancing to techno is easy and more fun for me since its fast-paced and you dance to the melody.
The only slow dancing for techno I could picture is if they were playing drum&bass.

Oh yeah,
I don't think much of the raver thing, in retrospect. I think it can be cool if you're a teenager, but some of it was downright goofy, with dudes sucking on pacifiers, people playing with vicks vapor rub, and glowsticks everywhere. Plus, I met the stupidest idiots through that whole raver scene. I eventually referred to them as e-tards. Ahh, those were silly times. Honestly, you have to be on ecstacy to get into it, IMO.

I hear ya. Specially about the ecstasy shit... there were a few extra-good-lookin' biotches who obviously had too many pills, they were moving like ragdolls...
The sad part is that a day or two ago I found that nearby there was this cool place where I would have paid like 5% less (ok, not me since I didn't spend a cent of my own) and would have had all the free shit I could drink - beer, rum, whatever - all night long, AND good music.

Frankly, both raves and traditional dance clubs are a waste of time. Strip away all of the faux-coolness and posturing bullshit, and why is everybody there? Simple: they have nothing better to do. They're either couples who can't think of something more creative to do on a Friday evening or they're single people who can't pick up a date and are hoping that a smoke-filled alcohol-drenched environment will make them more attractive to the opposite sex.

Nope. I personally found bars to be a shitty environment in which to meet girls. But that doesn't seem to stop a lot of others from trying.Aya wrote:Know that from experience, Mike?Darth Wong wrote:they're single people who can't pick up a date and are hoping that a smoke-filled alcohol-drenched environment will make them more attractive to the opposite sex.![]()

Maybe the people who go there get so fucked in the head from drugs that what is really a big load of suck they remember as infinitely cool the next day(that is assuming they remember anything).Slartibartfast wrote:Thoughts? Not so for some of us underagers.. I like going to the club because it's not a bad way to make some friends.. as well, I like the music, and it's just a fun place to hang out and dance. -shrugs- Even if I were able to drink, and I probably would drink, I more than likely (knowing me) wouldn't care so much about picking someone up.Darth Wong wrote:Frankly, both raves and traditional dance clubs are a waste of time. Bars and dances were never great places to get anything other than the Quick and Easy (if you catch my drift) and that gets old once you hit 24 and your libido isn't as hungry.
There were better chances to meet girls - hot girls - girls who look incredible in lingerie and secretly wear thongs to feel sexy - working at crappy jobs to pay the bills - at the university library. These are girls who hardly had a chance to get out and therefore almost never got hit on. Find those. They really, really, really need sex and there just aren't enough men around.*
*Warning: The preceeding paragraph is based entirely on the fantastic and glossy rose-tinted fantasy of Lagmonster's own past. Results may vary. Consult a doctor. Void in Europe.

Damn right, that pretty much describes my GF, she did work in the university library but she didn't wear thongs. And I can vouch for the fact that they really do need sex, boy do they ever....*Lagmonster wrote:There were better chances to meet girls - hot girls - girls who look incredible in lingerie and secretly wear thongs to feel sexy - working at crappy jobs to pay the bills - at the university library. *Disclaimer - the fact that I knew her already means I didn't exactly pick up, and by the time I visited her at the library we were already dating & having sex.

Lusankya: Deal!
Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.
![Razz :P](./images/smilies/icon_razz.gif)
Just throwing my opinion in on this. Clubs usually do suck, Raves are a complete wastes of time, unless you're into rolling, but bars can be another story. Though I'm not talking in terms of picking up women, because if you need a woman a Bar is definetly not where youw nat to meet one, unless you just need ass for the night.
But bars can be a fun place, if you find the right bar, to hang out with your friendes and ust relax and ahve a good time while drinking a few (or more). It's just a nice atmosphere to have fun and enjoy ourself, especially if you've got more people to hang out with then you want to have over at your house.

Wow, you actually go to these places to meet girls? I usually go in a group of friends with/without a girlfriend just to burn a few calories and have fun.Darth Wong wrote:Nope. Many of the girls I end up dating I meet at bars. They tend to be older than myself though. Clubs do suck to meet someone because its too loud and pretentious.
Parties will always be the best venues to meet prospective bf/gf candidates.
CLubs and bars are best utilized as a place to bring someone with whom you are already acquainted and using the setting to break the ice with them and get silly.
However, I shudder to think about the amount of money I've wasted at bars and clubs for the past 4 years![Mad :x](./images/smilies/icon_mad.gif)
