Er, not too sure were this thread belongs so I'm posting it here. Can someone please explain to me what the difference between anime & manga is? I've just started getting interested in anime recently & find that a lot of people seem to use the terms interchangably.

PS: This is probably a stupid question, but I'm asking it anyway. Please feel free to laugh & pelt me with rotten fruit.

the only real difference is anime is the animated medium of the art, while manga is the graphic novel form. otherwise there's no major difference.

Cheers. A friend of mine told me that there was no difference at all, but I was sure that wasn't right. :D

Manga = japanese comic.

Anime = japanese cartoon.

It's not quiet that simple. Not all Japanese cartoons and comics are anime and manga.

And whether they have to be Japanese is something of a debate.

Well, from the strictest point of view, and the one that matters most to the question, it is that simple.

After all, Anime and Manga are in fact the contemporary Japanese words for "Animation" and "Comics."

To be quite blunt; yes, they are. They are the respective words for the description of all animation and graphic novels, respectively.

Not it Japan, for reasons stated above. However, outside of Japan, it's an easy way to label Japanese animation and graphic novels.
