Purpose of DVD Regions
What is the purpose of DVD Regions?
Is there anyway I can change the Region setting?
Would changing the Region setting be illegal?

Re: Purpose of DVD Regions
To try to prevent piracy, I believe. Either that or to fuck with people.Jeremy wrote:What is the purpose of DVD Regions?
On most DVD-ROMs I think you can change the region setting 5 times before the firmware locks. However, there are companies that produce regionless DVD players. Not too sure on standalones.Jeremy wrote:Is there anyway I can change the Region setting?
No. But if the MPAA had their way, probably yes...Jeremy wrote:Would changing the Region setting be illegal?

To prevent losses. A DVD of a film might come out in one country before its out in cinema's in another. It prevents people importing the DVD and seeing the film before they're meant to.Jeremy wrote:What is the purpose of DVD Regions?
On DVD players, there's often a code you can enter via the remote to change the region code (or disable it completely, as I've done)Jeremy wrote:Is there anyway I can change the Region setting?
With DVD-ROM drives, see if there's any RPC-1 firmware for it.
No, though theres some people who seem to think otherwise.Jeremy wrote:Would changing the Region setting be illegal?

Various reasons; so studios can control the home release of various DVDs in regions with different theatrical release dates from Region 1, and also to guarantee exclusive markets for various foreign distributors (basically, so an American studio can have a distributor for each region if it wants). What is the purpose of DVD Regions?
On discs, no. On players, usually, but it depends on the player. Some can be cracked open physically and modified to play different region discs, although this would probably void your warranty. I've also heard it's possible to hack players for the same purpose but I wouldn't know anything about this. And some players are regionless (some discs are also, but for Hollywood movies you'll have to deal with regions). Some players are a little more easier to switch than others. Is there anyway I can change the Region setting?
I don't see why it would be.Would changing the Region setting be illegal?

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

You CAN legally buy regionless DVD players rather easily now. I don't know if any stores near you stock them, but I can think of at least one online store...
