Audio Bliss...

For the last 3 weeks I've been staying up 'till about 2am every night just listening to music. I've found audio bliss...I have a Naim CD5 CD player (on loan from a co-worker) hooked up to my Gilmore Amp to power my Senn 580 headphones. That's about $3000 worth of audio equipment, it makes me happy. Super precise, amazingly musical, it sounds better than anything I've heard in a long while, with the exception of a $6000 Grado RS-1 setup. This thing is evil, it's making me lose sleep cause I can't stop listening to it. And for sexy female vocals I break out my tube amp...:D

No not that tube, vacuum tube amp, like the one pictured below. It glows in the dark, keeps the room warm and makes sweet music. Mine's a homemade one and not nearly as nice, but it still sounds damn good.

That CD player is probably the vast majority of the cost. IIRC, Aerius built his Gilmore, and the HD580s aren't hideously expensive.

The Naim CD5 is about $2500 or so, the Gilmore in kit form is about $300, and the headphones can be had for $200 or less. Going from my $50 pawnshop special Panasonic CD/DVD player to one that's worth 50 times as much is pretty amazing. I think there's still lots of room for improvement in the system, a better CD player like a Wadia and a better amp to take advantage of it. Kevin Gilmore has recently designed a new version of his amp to power high impedance headphones like my Senn 580s, I might end up building it if I can get a power supply for the thing.
