Wish Me Luck!

Tomorrow morning I'm heading off to my first tournament as a collegiate fencer. It's at NJIT, and I am only about 2 months into my career fencing sabre, but I'm seven kinds of excited.

Too bad I'm only the alternate- I'll only get to fence if the squad is doing well. Never the less, just going is an honor.

Sabre fencing? You fucking psycho. :P Still, it's better than Epee-ists ("See how long my sword is?" "Mine's longer!" "Dog! Let's fight!"), and foil-ists annoy you with their constant disengage-lunges.

Seriously, good luck. Being in tournaments are fun, and I never regretted the opportunity being in one gave me to wag school. Skewer some bitch for me, yeah?

PS Do you have the old mesh-helmets? It sounds like a stupid question, but I hope you do. Have fun!

I always wanted to try fencing. Never got the chance. Oh well. Maybe one day, though it would've been better to start during my teens.

is it the same as here, that fencing is one of these wierd things fraternities do? one fraternity against the other one without masks? and you´re actually proud of the scares you get and you put a horse hair into the wound to get an infection and by that a better visible scar?

Fencing is fun. But you know what's even more fun?

Kendo. Without the armour.

Where do you live Salm?! Infecting their scars... ouch!

I mean, yah.. men with dashing, raking scars are one of those stables of movie-star sexiness.... but to actually want one? *shiver*

The SCA has really gotten into fencing the past ten years... not the tournement 'straight-line' fencing, but 1550-1650's French/Spanish old school fencing. They use Foils, Epee, Double Epee, Schlager and 'Scotty' Blades. Fighting styles include single sword, sword and dagger/sword, sword and 'Parry'. Paryying devices include bucklers, capes, and even mugs or cups! (Yes, it is possible to use a mug or goblet in the off hand and catch/deflect the oppenent's strike, I've seen it done.) When using a heavier blade, the fencers are allowed to slap or grab the blade, when is something illegal in Foil, Epee, and all Modern fencing.

Link to SCA Rapier Rules These rules are in Adobe format, and give the SCA rules for blades, melee combat, and protective clothing. I keep suggesting SirNitram try it out....

i live in stuttgart and this sort of thing is quite usual among fraternity members. some frats don´t fight at all, some use protective helmets and some only use protective eywear. the rest of the face and head are not protected and the only way not to get hit is to fend of your opponents strikes with your weapon. if you´re a member of one of these fraternities you ususually have to do a certain amount of fights in a certain amount of time or you´ll get thrown out.
another piece of evidence for the "all frat boys are morons" theory.

i was told that in austria some fraternities still use old pistols for duelling, but i´m pretty much sure that it´s bullshit.

LOL! No, no, not at all. I'm an NCAA athlete, which means that I follow certain rules while fencing- I wear a mesh mask, 2 layers of canvas clothing, an electric lame to register touches, so on and so forth. It's not NEARLY as badass as what you described.

Bah! Sabre is silly. I spent 2 years with my foil, and damn do I miss those days.
